Looking for examples of dual exhaust under the IRS
 

I did this on my '72 LT1/700R but am looking for other PHOTO examples...am ready to do this to my '71 383/200R with round Magnaflow stainless mufflers in the area
where the Jaguar resonators live. Will remove the small Jag mufflers and run 2.25 inch pipe from the down pipes with a X or H pipe connector. I have ported
Corvette Ram Horn manifolds with 2.5 inch to 2.25 adapters already for the needed clearance around the steering tower. Will have multiple V band clamps for
ease of servicing the trans and IRS in the future.

These photos show the old S1...looking for examples of how to attach the rear portion and other routes of the side facing pipes...

Got some photos from Rod Wade: They show his perfect exhaust work well...

On this first picture, are those the stock jag resonators being used? Or an actual muffler? How does it sound? Loud? Throaty? Subdued?
Just wondering as if my lt1 ever comes back from machine shop, exhaust sound will be something i will have to consider. I am currently running the original 4.2 but with not cats and front mufflers deleted. It's a little louder but not horrible, I wouldnt be upset if it was a bit louder, but dont want it to sound like a camaro....

My first photo on my old '72 XJ LT 1/700R, shows Magnaflow mufflers in the rear area where Jag resonators lived. Car was throaty but not loud, like a 80's Corvette.

I've no pictures of the installation in my car. And, not likely to get under it and make some!! Those days seem to be gone!

LT1 powered. Ram horn manifolds. Not ported. Were I to do it again, i'd do that. no gasket either. Just RTV, sensor safe. and high temp.

Sun Coast down pipes. Classy work and fit perfectly. I painted them with an aluminized product. Eastwood ?

Then a local muffler shop bridged the pipes back to the original jaguar front mufflers.
Two cats just aft of the trans. Some say that not good. Should be far up front. it works.

Then an H pipe.

Aft of the Jag mufflers is as I got it. A PO installed small glass packs in lieu of the resonators. Then, "little" tubes as stock through the cage. original SA chrome pipes welded in place !!

Not as elegant as Rob's work, but very workmanlike . Aligned well, nice welds.

And for transmission service, an assembly can be dropped.

Not tinny racous, ala "gutted mufflers". No back rap. Nice purr at idle. But definitely a V8!!

CAVEAT. My SMOG referee not pleased by the true dual pipe configuration. Sought a Camaro two to one to two!!!

It took my Cadillac factory manual to prove that the donor Cadillac had true dual pipes.

Go with the "x', better performance, tones things down. Actually helps mileage if you don't beat on it. Mine is 2.5". "X" is a Flowmaster. You do not want my mufflers - Flowmaster Super 44's. "X" is tight in the trans pan area. Mine has to come out for trans service. This system is flanged, my new system on my MK2 is with "V" band clamps. Yonaka - best price quality clamps. Mufflers hang from OEM hangers

Like the attachment method to the pan under the IRS..will do something like it this time. Glad to hear you like V bands..

I'll have to send an IRS eXhaust attachment photo tomorrow. It's similar to the one at the trans support. Bushings don't last but a season or two. Engine is tied down to minimize its movement. I had considered stainless "finger puzzles" to allow flex. Not enough room for the diameter for 2.5"

Because of the rigidness of the system/no flex in the hanger grommets they only last a couple of seasons.
V band clamps: inexpensive ones do not have an inner locking lip. Yonaka's have the lip. They have upgraded the outer band & bolts.

Thanks for the information about the Yonaka clamps, I looked at a comparison video and then ordered (6) Yonaka clamps but had to cancel the order. I am using 2.25 inch pipes for torque and they do not have that size.

Far be it for me to claim expertise in this. But, I do have a comment.

The hanger grommets in two of these examples are misplaced. I've seen many done that way!!

With the rubber perpendicular to the ground the load is suspended in rubber!! Ie, the load goes to rubber in shear. Not it's primary purpose. Noise and movement isolation is the purpose of the rubber !!

SO:

Move the bracket and the rubber to parallel. Load angle over the support angle.
rubber between. Support is now by steel. Rubber only to isolate noise and movement
Load in tension?

Should last almost indefinitely.

You're right! Smash that ice cream cone right into my forehead. Wish the pipes were not ceramic coated, then the change would be easy.

I wound up having 2.25" pipes neck down to 2" mandrel bent pipes going through the IRS. My car was lowered a little so I wanted the ground clearance.

Hey guys, i have done a twin 2.5” system which goes through the rear suspension. My car has air bags so can ride extremely low and i needed the clearance. Definitely wasnt the simplist way to route it but is possible, James.
