Hi, trying to get it running on 73 XJ6 S1. The near-motor wheelbox, the axis inside is almost seized and neither WD40 nor exercise has helped a lot. Besides buying a new wheel box, is the one I have something I can dismantle, if the plate is removed, can the axle be pushed/hammered out, or is the wiper arm spindle on the top pressed on so it's not possible?
I have a Lucas wiper wheelbox from a different British car (a Hillman actually) in my oddments box so just took a look. Im pretty sure this will be the same basic design as the Jaguar one perhaps with different gearing ratio.
if you remove the rear cover plate, the gear that is driven by the cable from the wiper motor has a spline where it joins to the spindle for the wiper arm. It looks like it should be possible to press it out if required.
The other end where the wiper arm connects is a hollow splined gear that slides over the end of the shaft tube, so spraying WD40 from the top probably has not managed to get any into the shaft tube
You have to take off the top of the dash to get to the wheelboxes. However, when you squirted WD40, did you first remove the chrome escutcheon situated just below the wiper arm ?
OK, thanks for input, I've now got the mechanical part sorted, wipers move freely when I work the cable without motor. Now to the electrical part, so Lucas wiper motor specialists etc., please chime in...
First, this car of a friend, it's not had an easy life. The wipers didn't work, the motor was held together with cable binders, the wiring was "cheated" by using only 3 of the 5 wires in the original wiring, and I see home made wiring on the switch behind the fold down plate. So more or less nothing is as original I think.
A new motor doesn't work, so I started analysing. Found this online:
My new motor and the original wiring have this 5 wire connector. On the original wiring however, 2-3-5 are correct, but Earth (black) is in position 4, and Live (Ignition on, White/Green) is in position 1. Is this from the old positive earth days? It's a 1973 XJ6 S1? Or is my motor wrong, Is there another motor I should have gotten that has switched 1 and 4 also?
Both the held-together-by-cable-binders-old-motor and the new looks the same, and has 16W markings on them.

Any suggestions? Thanks
This info is for my 1985 S3 and I don't know if any will apply to your S1.
Excellent drawing Dave, helped me understand and fix this, which in the end meant taking parts from the old and "new" wiper motor and combine. It now works, and can even park... :-)
