Question Monroe Rear shocks

Anyone out there have any experience with the Monroe 39003 rear shocks. I can get a set of 4 at a reasonable price and I know 2 of my original ones leak so need to replace. Also, do I just use an external spring compressor set and use the existing lower spring seats?

I think this has come up before. You might do a search.

As I recall the consensus was that the Monroes were 'just a shock absorber'. Nothing notably good or bad; they do the job.

I think most wanting to preserve the original feel think it's best to go with Boge. Those wanting a performance-oriented shock usually go with Gaz or Bilstein.

Personally I'd like to try Konis on my Jag. I'll need to set up a special savings account for that

And, yes, external spring compressor.

Can't remember about the seat. Need more coffee. Seems to me that new seats always come with the shocks?

Here's a pic that might help

https://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/u...nd-spring-rear

As I recall the rear shocks I've bought have always come with a new seat and collets, items #2 and #3 in the illustration.

Make sure to keep track of the sleeve, #6 in the illustration. If you lose it, or forget to install it, you'll have one helluva rattle!

I'd love to be the guinea pig.

This is really a bit silly but, as much as any other reason, I want Koni shocks "just because". I can't really justify the money but, just once, before I die, I'd like to just "go for it" and buy Koni shocks.

Cheers

Doug,
In a moment of unbridled enthusiasm I did equip my long gone V12 E-Type with new Koni's all round. Those were the days of my financial innocence. In my opinion they made no difference at all. Mind you, I was never on the track or thrashing it around. The best part of Koni's was the Oohh's and Aahh's when the bonnet was opened and viewers saw the red's!

go with the Monroes, don't waste the money on Boge shocks. My experience with Boge was "I could have had a Monroe for a lot less".

post the part number of the 4 you are considering. Monroes have the "factory ride" of the Jaguar XJ-6.

My 25 year old monroes are still good. I see you are near me in St Catharines. I have the right compressor, and you can borrow it.

Amazon - seems like I spend a lot of time on Amazon, has these that I am considering. In the picture they do not come with the spring seat or that tube cover thingy. I wonder if the old ones will fit?

Jose - Monroe 39003 OESpectrum Sensa-Trac Monotube Shock Absorber.
Robert - Thanks for the offer. It's a job planned for the spring. Will keep in touch and thanks for the offer.

yes, the Sensa-Trac are very decent shocks for the money, not harsh, not wobbly. They replicate the factory ride perfectly.

Bilstein, Koni, KYB, are hard as a rock and expensive. Boge, expensive too and a waste of money because they are weaker than Monroe and in a matter of a year they lose their feel.

shop for them online, you can get them for less. Advance Auto Parts, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, Napa, CarQuest. Shop till you drop!!

Robert,
Thanks for your offer on the spring compressor. I have a set of external ones that should work, but thanks for your offer. Did your Monroe's come with spring lower seats or did you just reuse the original ones? Ian

Just wondering what you mean by "weaker than Monroe" and "lose their feel".
Can you back up these statements or are they just personal opinion?
