Moonroof Question

Now don't laugh but I need to find where the motor is located so I can test it it's currently not working I'm starting with the switch I'm hoping that's the problem but if it isn't then it's off to the motor.

Normally these things are in the trunk somewhere, probably fairly high up towards the rear. My Jaguar technical notes have nothing on the sunshine roof.

It's in the trunk, but the gear that moves the sunroof cables is only accessible by removing the rear seat. If you unscrew the bracket that holds the cables to the gear and then leave the cables free and loose, you should be able to test the motor.

In my case the switch was bad in one direction.

Switch is most likely the cause as the copper contacts inside sometimes require cleaning to remove corrosion or other deposits. The switch can be disassembled and the contacts cleaned with a rubber (eraser) from the end of a pencil.

Thanks to all that replied the new switch should be here tomorrow so that will be the first test LOL!!!! :icon_banana:

When diagnosing your motor fault be aware that the motor will have a positive feed to each terminal. The motor is energized by removing the positive and replacing it with a negative (EARTH) feed on one terminal. Reverse is obtained by swapping the current feed.

P.S. The XJ6 has a SLIDING ROOF or SUNROOF. A Moonroof is usually a designation for a clear roof panel.

Hmmmm... good tip. I did not know that you could fix the switch simply by cleaning off corrosion!

Well the switch has been replaced and the roof still doesn't work so now on to the motor

There is a 30 amp thermal breaker with OTTER written on it. Sometimes they fail and no power to the circuit.

Prior to replacing parts, have you checked all the connections in the circuit? If the breaker has been tripped, there is usually a reason: either high resistance or a short to earth (ground) within the circuit.

The breaker can be checked with an ohmmeter (while disconnected from the circuit) for continuity.
