moving the crankshaft
 

Hi all, busy working on the distributor contacts and the static timing. Think I know what I'm doing but...

first I have to turn the crankshaft. I know this is pretty basic but what size/kind spanner? (Car didn't come with original tool kit).

Further, to get leverage, is it necessary to unbolt the fan and shift it out of the way? I have an automatic (I understand that in a manual you can shift the crankshaft by working the gears and moving the car some).

As I work on this this weekend more complicated questions might follow but, for now, I just got to get started.

That big nut head is 1", I think??

Should be able to reach it from underneath.

On the S2 there is a hex cast into the pulley of the water pump for just that purpose, and that one is 32mm.

ONLY wind that engine "clockwise" as looking at the front, so if you go past the timing mark, go around again, and be more careful. An assistant here is really a must.

Off to get that spanner then...

Actually, once under car, discovered the crankshaft nut is significantly bigger than 1 inch. Finally found 2 internet sources saying same : 1 5/16" Got that spanner on order and will post back here. One source from Jag-lovers says best to move the fan, too. Hoping that isn't necessary as setting the timing is not an uncommon thing t have to do.
