Default need help with fuel problem

First let me say hello to all. My name is matt. I have a 1987 xj6 4.2l i lost power to the fuel pump the car has been sitting about 4 years however i drained the fuel tanks added fresh fuel and the car started with some starting fluid it idled very rough for a while to be expected but it was running on its own. so i changed the plugs and wires also installed a new coil. now when i try to start nothing if i spray starting fluid starts runs tiil it burns the spray up so i know all the ignition is working i took off the pump power supply and tested for voltage nothing i checked and reset the inertia switch seems to be fine best i can tell now i have removed the covers to the fuel relay and the main relay i can see the contacts make connection when the key is turned but only on the fuel one not sure if they both should be making contact at the same time or not. i guess my question is aam i on the right track for finding what went wrong? any help on this matter would be great i have been reading on hear the last few days and have found some very helpfull stuff just not quit ther yet.

Thank you matt

Hi BadHead
Can you start a new post in the XJ40 section, you might get a better response. The XJ40 EFI is completely different to the EFI on a Series 3 XJ.

I think your fuel filter is clogged with dirt and needs replacement.
