Need info on instrument cluster bulbs
 

A few days ago, I installed 2 USB charging ports in the passenger side ashtray. I tapped power from my sunroof switch so I only have power there with the ignition 'ON'.
So far, So good. I also changed the cigarette lighter port from constant power to Ignition 'ON' only. I tapped the Ignition 'ON' power from the radio wire.
I now want to replace all of the bulbs in the instrument cluster, which I should have done before I reinstalled the dash.
I looked at the parts catalog and I have the following but when I try to cross reference the numbers I come up blank.
As per the catalog I need the following:
Bulb # 987 x 8
Bulb # 503 x 2
Bulb # 281 x1
Bulb # 286 x 1
Bulb # 989 x 1 for Opticell
Bulb # 289 x 1 for Glovebox
Bulb # 289 x 1 for Map Light
Bulb # C31106 x 2 for Interior post Lamp ( this one I can find.
I know some are screw type, some are bayonet type and some are wedge type, but the numbers don't show up.
Are there numbers that supersede the above and if so, can any one tell what the correct/new numbers are.
I have a tentative order with EverydayXJ for all my broken fiber optic lines.

I found the reverse lights bulbs at NAPA. Take each bulb needed there and they usually find equivalents.

Jose: I don't have any problems with my exterior bulbs. I am looking for the current bulb numbers for all of the interior.
Instrument cluster, turn signals, map and glovebox and B pillar.
Once I have the correct numbers, I want to cross reference them to get the proper LED equivalent.

The LED lightbulb equivalency is a well trodden path. Search "LED instrument lights" and you should find the crossover part numbers already done for you.

I just changed mine and now the gauges are at least readable at night. Not all that bright but readable

The issue from Warlock was that the Tach and Speedo lighting was not as good as the other 4 gauges.
I was reading a post by Doug where he had purchased 4 LEDs for the gauges, was able to correct that issue using a different bulb and he was happy with the way his cluster lit up.
I will try to find his post again.

Regarding my Post #6: Doug states that he used C15788 for the gauges and Roger Mabry's recommendation of "E10 12v 3528 7SMD 6000k/4300k MES Screw LED" and was happy with the result.

The problem I had was getting the brightness of the tach and speedo to match the four small gauges. I was about to give up the project entirely until Roger's recommendation came along.

In an attempt to have more light in the cabin, I tried LEDs in the B-pillar for about 10 seconds before I reinstalled the original incandescents (available at O'Reileys).
LEDs, although visually brighter, no matter what they say about color rendition made the interior look Jaundiced!
They threw a green cast on Everything, wool headliner and leather seats alike!
Disgusting!

To gain more light from the Festoons I thought of painting half the bulb with Chrome Paint:

First I carefully masked off half the glass and the contacts so no short circuis occurred:

and sprayed what was left.
The resulting light is Much brighter with most of the light Not being wasted in the interior of the Pillar but radiated into the cabin, and a Much softer and more pleasing color rendition than the Sickly LEDs!

In fact, the only down-side, is that unless the pillar switch(es) are disabled (aka Jose's mod) during any interior work, these will still melt the lenses eventually.

Elinor, you can also line the area behind the bulb with aluminum tape or better yet, find suitable size thin mirror pieces and glue them to the area behind the bulb, the light reflection with a mirror is augmented to its maximum but the mirror absorbs the incandescent bulb heat. Ladie's compacts are a good source for these mirrors or even the mirror tools sold at autoparts stores. .

I also lined the Map Light housing with thin aluminum stick-on tape and was impressed with the difference.

Roger's recommendation to Doug as per the website shows screw base bulbs. My Speedo has a Wedge base bulb and the Tach has a screw base.
The 4 smaller gauges have screw base bulbs.
So, my options are:
1. Replace the Wedge socket for a screw type socket at the Spedometer.
2. Locate a Wedge type bulb with the same lumens value as the Screw base bulb recommended.
3. Replace all of the incandescent bulbs with bulbs of a higher wattage.
I have owned this car for over 6 years and I have never driven it at night or in the rain.(Black is hard to keep clean)
I just wanted to do the upgrade because I thought it would be an easy job.
Every post I read on the topic seem to recommend different bulbs which makes it very confusing. (like ultrabrite, superbrite, warm, white, green and of course different numbers.
So, for those who have done this successfully, it would be nice if the bulbs used were listed with bulb # and location.
For the gauges there 10 bulbs total. 3 in the tachometer, 3 in the speedometer and 1 each in the small gauges.
With the bulbs being pretty cheap, I went ahead and ordered bulbs of different bases and different lumens value in white and green from LEDlights.com.
I will use the trial and error method and post the results when I am done.
I am also going to convert all the bulb sockets to screw base type (from Welshent).
