NET WORTH: 1988 XJ Vandan Plas V12

Hey there,

Looking to get advice where to sell a 1988 XJ Vandan Plas V12 in Ontario and to get an idea of its net worth.

I inherited it about 7 years ago, driven it twice and previously it was sitting unused, under a cover for about 15 years. Invested around 15K to get it back on the road, then the power steering blew. Sadly its a bit too high maintenance for me, plus I live in the city and can't give it the love it needs. Milage is 127,000.

A lovely car...I had an identical 88 - the colour is Crimson metallic, and the interior is the same as mine was, in Doeskin. I have had experience with many of these Canada-only V12 Vanden Plas models so I have a fair idea of what has happened to the values over the years. You will not like the answer. Almost no one wants a 12 cylinder car these days when a far more economical 4 cylinder car can put out almost 300 hp (which is slightly more than the output of the V12 in Canadian form). The prices in the last couple of years have varied but for cars which are not the special 1992 "last 100" model, the values have struggled to reach $8 to $10k CAD and often have been sold for significantly less. Cars from British Columbia always command higher prices than those from the east (a weather/salt-use related differential). The values will rise at some point because these cars are increasingly rare (only something like 426 were built in the 1988 calendar year -Jaguar has no record of model year numbers for this model, only the number sold in a calendar year to Jaguar Canada). But at present the market for them is almost moribund.
I wish I could give you better news...please PM me if you have any questions about your car or this model. I will be able to help.

Somewhat rare. To Jaguar devotees, a desirable model. Most of the motoring world shrugs its shoulders at them, though.

I think a few truly mint condition examples have topped $30K. These were exceptional instances; they were indistinguishable from brand new.

I've seen more typical/average examples fail to meet $7500 on Ebay

The amount of body rust has a great bearing on price.

I had an '88 VDP V12 as well. It was given to me, gratis. Body rust pretty well wiped out sale-abilty and market value so the owner gave it to me rather than send it to the scrapyard.

Bring A Trailer seems to fetch higher prices for unusual cars.

Cheers

Nice car. I'd put it up on ebay with a $8k reserve and see what you get.

I agree. The big factor is rust; if it is totally rust free, it is a special car can be marketed as such. If rust is a factor, you are probably "underwater" financially. I am a big fan of bringatrailer.com. If you can take lots of good photos and willing to commit to a week of answering questions it will probably bring a good price. You can list it at "no reserve" and it will be gone in a week at what the market considers a fair price.

P.S. For those of you not familiar with BAT, I highly recommend it for entertainment. Right now there is a 21k mile 1967 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow listed that I am salivating over.

The title of the post excited my curiousity.

Net worth? I see it. Fifteen grand to ix the PS!!!! As statrd, under water. for sure !
Many would have sent it to the breaker !! .Sad!!! Fox cost more than it's value!!

A better term. Actual Cash Value. Defined as " the price agreed on by a willing seller and a willing buyer" The catch is execution!! Comparable sales might do it.

Here, I'd find as many places to advertise it that might be read by car enthusiasts. Forums,

Carl

Hello,

I think the prices stated above are about right. I've owned 3, and still have an '88.

Maybe contact the Ontario Jaguar Owners' Club, located in Toronto

Ontario Jaguar Owners Association

Also, notice on thier main page of the upcoming Ancaster British Car Club show and flea market April 21st. . The OJOA has a stand there. Some folks walk around the show with a sign on thier back "Jag for sale". I'll have a vendor's table there, and you welcome to put pictures and description on my table.

Ring if you like 905-932-0284 St Catharines.

Good luck,

Rob

Details! We want details!

Floyd-Oid,

"Power steering blew"... Do you have any more detail? Pump? Lines? PS assembly itself? That (and any other pertinent info) will actually help.

Many folks selling cars attempt to gloss over the defects. But your likely audience for this particular gem will be driven away by any "deliberate mystery". Conversely, your likely purchaser for this type of project may recognize exactly what happened and already posses the solution if you are detailed enough.

Beautiful car, great drivetrain.

Good Luck!
