Odd windscreen trim on Series 2.
 

Bought a Series 2 and it came with this windscreen trim. Is this OEM and can it be swapped out with OEM 2 piece style? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

looks like brackets for a Visor

They're a seam finisher for lack of a better word. I've seen another car on C/L with the same and the pieces on Ebay for sale. They have a bracket behind the rubber / chrome piece.

I'm told by someone who claims to know, that the "clips" on Series 2 windshield trim were mandated by the US Department of Transportation to keep the chrome edging from flying off in the wind, startling drivers behind and generally causing havoc.

Considering how difficult it is to reinstall said trim properly and securely, this just might be true.

LnrB, I think your right and here's a pic of the $100k XJC with them also. Here's a pic of them on there own from Ebay. I'm hoping someone here knows if I can swap it with the 2 piece style. It's not bad from 20ft but up close it looks a bit hideous.

I think it's only 2 pieces anyway. At least the one we recently got from the wrecking yard was only 2 pieces.
They bolt together in the center of top. I don't remember what holds the bottom center together besides a lot of hope.

The side clips bolt through holes in the finisher and roof. There is no seam under them.

II asked Paul in Ft Lauderdale the same question years ago and got the answer that the two piece will not fit and we are stuck with the trim pieces.

The three clips are not just for the trim. They are to keep the whole windsheild in during a crash. After a few crashes, it was observed that the windshield was poping out and occupants were being thrown from the car in the days before seat belts were mandatory. As someone who has taken a part many of these car for restoration I can confirm once those 3 clips are removed, the windshield will pop out with just hand pressure. This was fairly common for gasket'd windows, most manufactures switch to bonded windshields in car in the early 70's for this reason.

Thanks LnrB for taking the time to snap those pics. I was assuming the clips were for windscreen containment and Icsamerica's post confirms it for me.

A couple of questions -
1. Aren't series 1 windshields held in by the same seal / gasket set up as this w/o clips/retainers? Are they that easy to pop out?
2. All the pics of cars and part numbers I've found on the net are absent the retainers. Are these all euro cars/part #'s?
3. How are later model series 2 windscreen trim/seals held in?

Yup. Ditto. At about that time, cabon security for passengers was hetting a lot of needed attention. Much safer to stay in and remain secure fdrom incoming whatewvers…

1. Yes - The early Series 1 seal/gasket is the same without the clips. They are easier to get out, but I think a little tougher than just pushing on them. The seal does help to keep them in place...
2. The reason they aren't in the Series 1 parts manual is because they started being added in 1973, so you'd have to get a very late parts manual for them to be in it. I have a Series 1 manual printed in July 1974 that has those clips in it.
3. As far as I can recall, the Series 2 kept those clips to the end of the run. The Series 3 was able to drop them because of the way the windscreen was sealed in place. It's much tougher to get out.

As far as I know, The early Series 1 trim without the brackets will fit on the 73 and later cars to 78. Whether it's the most sound choice is debatable...
