Old Style Cam Covers?
......how'd it work out?
I found your thread while searching for info about the "universal" fitting of a 3.8 cover on a 4.2 engine. I recently purchased a nice ser. 1.5 2+2 E type, but the exhaust cam cover had been over torqued, cracked, and repaired....with a couple holes cracked again.
Not in a big hurry to swap it out, and am a relatively patient bargain hunter, but I expect to pay upwards of 2-3 hundred for a nice set. The O. P. got a real bargain!

The answer is..... Yes....
The original smooth covers from the 3.8 will work on the 4.2...
And, yes, the 3.8 had the tach drive on the rear, but it is easily solved by adding a blanking plate to the rear of the cam cover.. (I'll attach some photos)...
This pair is on a 76 Coupe (4.2L) and will be removed and sold... The price the OP paid was about right ($75)....
