out at 3rd!
I have lost 3rd gear. My car is a 76 SII v12 with 66k miles on the clock and she won't shift in to 3rd. The fluids are pink and to level, I am hoping maybe it is time for a filter change and not a rebuild. Does anyone have any ideas before I head to the shops?

Gotta think function. Third or direct drive is accomplished by a multiple disc 'clutch". The "clutch pack". Metal, then fiber alternate stack.
Just plumb wore out??? Engagement and/or control. Hydraulics. How? First, the valve body. But, perhaps before that the external governor. Operation of the other gears, first, second, reverse imply that the required pressure is there. So, control or clutch pack worn out. I hope that starts a diagnostic thinking process. Carl |
Recheck all the basics, fluid and since it Should be a BW12 with a vacuum modulator. Make sure there is vacuum at the modulator. Also check the microswitch at the throttle that is used for kick-down solenoid.
If it just wont go in to 3rd...it could be a stuck valve in the transmission's valve body. Try the Italian tune up...get on the highway and rev it out a few times and get it hot hot hot. Maybe you'll get lucky. |
