Please add the XJ12 that includes 1994 to the forums

I originally posted the message below in the new member area, however, as I doubt it will be seen there, I am copying a transcript of the other post here. There is no Jag model that includes the 1994 XJ12. Many call it an XJ40 for whatever reason, but trust me, it's an XJ12.
Any help with this excentric and unusual, yet incredible vehicle would be greatly appreciated in the way of parts, general service schedules you don't want to miss etc. I am a car junky and know my favorite models mechanically like the face I shave every morning, but this is JUST A BIT different.

Earlier post : I am new to these forums and recently purchased my first Jag, a 1994 XJ12 in perfect mechanical condition and solid cosmetically. My battery lost charge on me as the car was sitting while I was addressing some cosmetic issues. At any rate, once I trickle charged the battery the 4 note tone that played when the car was locked or unlocked by the keyless fobs is gone and replaced by a two note sound. Just wondered what was up. Ideas welcomed. Also, does anyone know what happens when you replace the distributor cap with a non-Marelli as they no longer make a cap for this engine. I am told that non-Marelli distributor caps can be an issue. I know Saab & Volvo as well as anyone and am trying to get my feet wet on what I consider a classic. Please advise. Jeff

Hi Jeff

I'm not trying to speak for the administration, as I'm new here myself. But typically the XJ40 badge speaks for a range of years, more than a particular model.
It would be the same as saying the Series3 XJ12 would fall under a different classification than the Series3 XJ6. Both have the same body, interior, etc, it's only the heart of the beast that is changed.
The only exception to this rule is the Canadian V12 VDP, which is essentially a Series 3 XJ12, that carried over until 1992. It has the same body and interrior as the 80s Vanden Plas and Soverign models.

The same is true for the XJ40, whether it has the 6 or 12.

Some folks suggest a more fitting (or should I say less confusing) identification of the XJ40 would be to call it a Series IV, the X300 a Series V, etc.......

Reguardless, you do have a beautiful car to be proud of.....

David is correct. The XJ40 is a body classification, has nothing to do with the engine. Just as the Series 1, 2, 3 and X300 come with either the 6 or 12 cylinder. But you've got the idea. No reason to beat it to death.

I have the original Marrelli caps in stock. See below:

I have the aftermarkets, too. I wouldn't put one on my car though.

Ken: Your links took me to an area that says, "is not available". That being said, what are the repercussions of placing an aftermarket cap on an XJ12. Ya know, the Marelli's are gonna run out. THEN WHAT???? Is there one aftermarket that is better than the others? What is the demise of these things? Too much heat would be my guess, but I am not an expert. Just a shade tree guy. Please advise, Jeff Also, how often should a cap, rotor and wires be replaced on this monster? Thank you in advance.:)

Seems to be different schools of thought on this. Some say the correct rotor is more important than the correct cap. I tell people to go Marelli with both. I wouldn't let them go longer than 25K. The spark is so strong it can actually blow the top off the cap.

If given the opportunity to hold the Marelli and the AM units side beside, you feel that the Marelli is probably 3 times as heavy. It's some thick plastic!

Enjoy that car, they are blast. I took one our company XJ12's for a weekend for a car show. What a hoot to drive!

I don't know what happened with the link. Probably something I did. The caps sell for $165.94, rotor $53.57, and gasket is $12.59. If you need, just call me 800 338 5238 x626.
