Power steering fluid
Recently had steering rack re-built and the shop told me they used factory specified fluid type CHF11S. Can anyone confirm correct fluid for 1973 XJ6 please?

LOL, they saw its "wun uff 'dem urrra-Pee-yun Jobs" and put in what they though was the right fluid. That is not the right fluid. Your power steering system calls for regular ATF. That 11S fluid maybe me mineral and its compatibility with the rack seals is a major question. That 11S fluid is green, have a look at your resovoir and check if the fluid is green, red or clearish. I'm reasonably confident they will insist its the right fluid so here is the page from the service manual. That 11S fluid is also super expensive compared to ATF. The ONLY time Jaguar issued Pentosin CHF 11S was for the X100 Convertible top hydraulics.(after UNIVIS was discontinued due to fluid failure)bob |
Thanks, that's what I thought. My haynes manual states ATF. I am installing the rebuilt rack myself, I only had them refurbish it and test for leaks. When I got it home I noticed the green fluid in it when I was centering the rack. I got most of the fluid purged during this process. I called them to ask them what it was and what the manufacturer specified and that's when he kept insisting it was manufacturer specification HSF11S.
I plan on flushing it with ATF a couple of times, hopefully it wont be compromised too much. I'm going to call him back and insist that if it fails within the one year warrenty period they will be responsible. Not sure it will do any good though. |

the first one, the Mineral one, I use nothing synthetic.
it should be red. If it is repackaged Transmission fluid only they know. i have never used transmiission fluid in any power steering. |
Ok,
So now I'm as confused as ever. I flushed the rack of the CHF11s and installed it in car. I'm using Castrol, Transmax, Dex/Merc fluid. It has been working fine now for one whole week. I've moved on to finding my parasitic battery drain, which turned out not to be parasitic at all but self inflicted when I installed a relay controlled by the unused rear defrost switch (forgot to turn it off when not used). Oh well, too many old cars and too many dead brain cells I guess. |
