Problems with my 1989 Jaguar XJ6
 
I've had my car for a couple years now, when I first got it it ran, had some minor problems with it, but ran. Over time we had battery issues, had to charge it every time to get it started. At the time I didn't have the time or money to mess with the car. Come to find out the battery was not the right size, purchased a new battery but it in, the only thing that is working in the car is some lights and windows/sunroof. Don't get any sound when you turn the key over or anything. Any suggestions will help. Thanks

Maybe the first thing to do would be to download the S57 wiring diagram file. It is broken down into function specific areas to make it easy to use. Its in the how to's at the top of this forum area.

If the car has been sitting for a long time unused, before you do anything work the transmission lever between park and drive a few times and also work the key back and forward a few times to see if its just an oxidised contact.

If you get no noise, not even a click, when you turn the key, I would begin at the start relay. On the start relay (centre top of firewall)check to see the earth from the transmission switch is there, and that you see 12V when you turn the key. If both these things are present then the relay has probably failed.

Thanks Doug. I looked that up before I started, but chose a poor reference (shows XJ6 and XJ40 overlapping in the early 90's when you look closely). Was 86 the last one, or is that wrong also?

S3 6 cylinder to "about" early 1987.

S3 shape in V12 form carried on to about late 1991.

That is the confusion mainly, the engines in the same body and overlapping.

The XJ6 of "XJ40" are from 1987 to about late 1994, then XJ6 became the X300.

Right, there was indeed a 1987 Series III XJ6, with the last coming off the line in April 1987. As far as I know these last cars went only to North America, with the ROW getting the XJ40 cars.

North American (or at least the USA) starting getting the XJ40s in mid-1987, as "1988 model year" cars.

To this day some parts manufacturers (and even Jag enthusiasts) don't acknowledge these 1987 Series III XJ6s.

As Grant mentioned the Series III body went on until 1991-92 but those cars were V12 only.....and fairly low production.

Actually about 50 a week of the V12s were made in the late 80s up to 1991. I had a trip around Castle Bromwich in the late 80s and saw the V12 Series 3 bodies being lead-loaded by grey/white haired old chaps who were clearly getting towards retirement.

Jaguars had loads of lead in them in the old days, but there's none in the modern cars. the bodies are designed to not need it. The XJ40 cars always had a chrome trim at the bottom of the D post to hide the joint. In the old cars this would have been lead-loaded and painted.

according to Paul Skilleter of Jaguar World Magazine, the XJ-40 was sold since 1983 but in some test markets only.
