replaceing fuel return solenoid - which fuel hose?
Hi, quick question, wondered if anyone knows on a series 3 4.2 what the fuel hose size is that goes through the rear wheel arches? and more importantly where it goes as it goes off into the bodywork behind the arch!?
I need to get around to fitting a new solenoid valve in the RHS rear arch as I'm not getting any fuel return to the right hand tank, and it's all really crusty in there and horrible... I have the part in, and various fuel hose sizes in for doing the rest of the car hoses, but not sure what to put here and also not sure where it feeds when it goes through the back part of the wheel arch before it ends up in feeding the top of the tank inlet? It was pretty crusty and mucky up there and couldn't get the shielding plate off could only get it loose and pushed to one side!
thanks a lot, Al.

Hi All,
I'm having another go at replacing the fuel return solenoid in the RHS wheel arch, but stuck on a couple of issues and wondered if anyone has been through this !?
(doing this on the driveway jacked up so not got the best view... but I thought this should be a diy-able job!)
1) the tin plate covering the valve has two screws and a bolt - the screws come off but bolt just seems to go round and round and isn't seemingly coming out - is there a captive nut on the other side or is it just a long thread drilled in to the body? how can I get this to undo!?
2) I can get the tin place to bend and move to the side a bit and get to the hose clips around the valve, but I can't get a good view of where the hose goes - it seems to go backwards into behind the valance before it must connect somewhere to the metal return that feeds in to the top of the tank??... couldn't find this in any parts diagrams so I am not getting something I think!!
... the reason is that I want to replace the near 40 year old hoses and clips on them at the same time!! and put some stainless steel ones on not the mild steel ones Jaguar thought wise to put in a wheel arch in Britain!
3) which hose size goes on it? am guessing it might be 3/8"? ... since that what is mentioned for the start of the fuel return metal pipe??
4) the wires to the valve come out from behind the back of the wheel arch - and there seems to be a plate with 4 very rusty screws that needs to come off to get the new wires connected up to the electrical feed?? any idea how to get at the source of the wires - is this actually a roundish blacking plate with 4 desperately rusty screws in amongst all this muck/goo/rust that needs to be gotten off and replaced?? ie by drilling it out?... of maybe I should cut the wires and crimp some different connectors on and put a sleeve over it to bodge a current to it?
Sorry for making a meal out of it but struggling amateur here hoping to solve it without a trip to the garage!
Thanks in advance for any help and answers, Al.

Yes, the hose is 3/8". I’ve done this job several times but my memory isn’t the best. Isn’t the big bolt about 4" long and a nut on the back side? The round plate behind the wheel is held by 4 very short sheet metal screws. Clean it with a wire brush and if you can’t get them out with a screwdriver small vice grips should be able to grasp the heads and they should come out. Again they are short and small so it should not take much to get them out.
Be sure to note that the left and right return valves are different. One opens when power is applied and the other closes when power is applied. I’ve seen them installed backwards and also two left ones instead of one of each.
I’m sure someone with a better memory will chime in.
