rob xj6 series 1

Hi everyone

I have a problem with my series 1 -73 jag
just recently I have been working on fixing up my brake callipers and ball joints
and I've must have over worked my bonnet release lever because now only one side opens up
at closer inspection one cable has pulled thru from the bonnet catch.

does anyone know how to release the catch from inside the bonnet area?

and can someone send me a photo on the passenger side catch so I can see
how the cable enters the catch and which way I need the push or pull the catch for it to release my bonnet

thanks rob

If you look at the pics you can see I have marked where you need to hook a coat hanger or piece of wire around the catch and pull it towards the windscreen.
You will have to lift the right side of the bonnet and jamb it with a wood block. Keep in mind you will be going in over top of the battery so wrap your wire with insulation tape so you don't short out the terminals to the body or bonnet.

Good luck, maybe someone else has a better way to do this.

There is a way in via the wheelarch for just this eventuality

I could not find the way in you mention from either wheel arch, maybe overlooking something as it is 9pm here and ptch black. I did find a hole about 1/2 inch diameter just in front of the battery tray, but it looks like someone has just punched something through. It would be about the right position to poke a long screwdriver in there and unlatch the bonnet from underneath. But there is no similar hole in the right wheel arch.

rob's bonnet catch problem

thanks guys
I going to try drilling a hole in the wheel arch to see if I can access the bonnet catch from there
it was some thing I was thinking about doing, so I'm going to give it a try
I think it will cause less damage to my paint job this way
i'll kept you posted

Do you want some measurements so you don't drill through something you shouldn't

rob bonnet

yes that would be great
I think some of the bolts that hold the catch down can be located in the wheel arch?
I need to have a look and relate it back to your photos
see how you go with the measurements not sure where to measure from

It looks like my car has had the same proceedure.
I have 2 holes in the gaurd, both work, just tried them.

Hole 1. is near the 2 bolts for the catch, the hole is forward of the front bolt and slightly to the left(if yo are looking toward the front of the car). In the first pic you can see a tab above the hole near my finger, that tab needs to push towards the rear of the car. A short screwdriver will reach(1-2 inches inside the hole).....update, hole 1 looks like it might have alredy been there, hole 2 has been punched through.

Hole 2. is near the front of the battery tray,in the third pic it is near the rear of the inner gaurd(about 240mm in from the wheel arch. You will need a screwdriver about 200mm long to reach this one.(from base if handle to tip). latch needs to be levered towards the rear of the car also

Hope this helps:icon_toast:

Hole number 1 is there on both gaurds, thanks Fraser. I was looking for a much bigger hole in the dark.

robs bonnet problem fixed

I had a look today under my wheel arch and found a rubber plug
I pulled it out and stuck a screw driver in it and wiggled it about and pop
the bonnet opened straight away
what a relief !
thanks to everyone
