Don't what model you have but on a Series III the cap seals are retained by little 'starlock washers'....which can be gentle wiggled off and re-used. Wriggle the starloks off, remove seal, install new seal, push the little starlock washers back into place. That's it!

Look at item #11 in the illustration..

Earlier XJ6s might be different, I dunno.

I just replaced mine on a series 1 last weekend. Like Doug said, pry off top two star retainers (reuse). Pull old rubber gasket out (its sandwiched in groove). I found the new gaskets a bit fat and didn't want to go back in groove so I used a flathead screwdriver and slightly opened up the groove. I then applied a little silicone lubricant to aid in sliding new gasket back in between metal groove. Once in I just taped the metal back down although not necessary. I re-applied star retainers using appropriate sized nut driver to shove back on stud.

Hmmm, the seal kit I've had on hold is a fibrous pad. Matches the sad looking ones on the caps on my 83. How they pass the vacuum test part of SMOG is a question best left sans an answer.

CAVEAT. Put a catch cloth across the open tank filler and under the caps to be worked on.

Google "Jaguar AEU1576" and "Jaguar AEU4174"

They're out there; silly expensive.

I bought some sheet neoprene and made my own

Cheers

Thanks for the response. I have a series II but that’s good to know for future reference. Fortunately, I found the part I needed and ordered it from Moss.
