S1 XJ wiper motor brushes

1 Attachment(s)
My wipers decided to give up... I tested the switch and it has 12V and there is 12V at the plug for the motor.. motor just gets warm if the switch in on for an extended time...

Tested the motor out of the car with 12V on Pins 3 and then 5 with ground on Pin 1... it just "hummed".

Took out the motor and took it apart... cleaned and lubed it and all is free and looks good except for one brush, the odd bottom one and it has a jagged
edge in the middle???

Has anyone just changed the brushes and had success or should I quit now and get a new/different motor?

Any other ideas?

Ive had some success with a Series 2 wiper motor by adding a spacer behind the brush spring for addition pressure. Perhaps wear, time and heat weaken the spring.

when wiper motors start to become a hassle it is best to find a replacement instead of trying to fix them.

try SNG Barrat USA store to see what they have.

Interesting finding a new rebult motor

Used S1 wiper motors that work are very rare... SNG Barratt wants me to send in mine and they will rebuild it..

Found one in stock at Terry's Jag, has a core charge but is refundable on the return.. ordered it and is on the way. Will test it with 12V upon arrival
and hope all is well..

Will continue to play with this one until I need to send it back as a core... will file the one jagged brush down and see what happens... spring tension appears to
be the same on all the brushes and they are free to move in/out.

glad you found one at Terry's and glad to know SNG Barrat can rebuild them.

Used a round stone on the jagged edge of the brush

I decided since I had to send in the old one as a core I should try to use a round stone on my Dremel. I ground it down nice and smooth...

IT WORKS NOW...out of the car and I will re-install it and see how it works in the car.. should be fine again for years to come.

Cancelled the rebuilt one with Terry's Jag and hope I can save almost $300.00 and the days while waiting for it to arrive. Will back in the car
in hours now...

Will buy a Lotto ticket if all goes well..
