screeeech!!!

my 86 xj6 makes an appalling sound in the morning when i turn the steering wheel

i had the belts replaced recently when i did the water pump

i checked and all fluids are at proper levels

what am i missing????

Recheck the belt tension. It's not unusual for new belts to stretch and slacken shortly after installation

belts

i checked the belts and they seem ok. what is the litmus test to determine what too much slack is?

the sound seems to be coming from the bottom of the rod going from my engine compartment to my steering wheel

I concur with Doug. Put new belts on recently and they squealed shortly thereafter. Just tighten up the tensioners a few turns and see if the noise stops.

Simple check is to try anti squeal spray on the belt.

belt spray

i tried the spray and it doesnt do anything

when im backing out of a spot and..i sometimes feel tension while cutting the wheel

as i said earlier when i open the hood it sounds like the noise isnt by the belts but maybe the power steering pump

faulty pump maybe?

Find the longest span of the belt and press down firmly with your fingers. If the belt deflects more than about 1/4" it's too loose.

Could be the pump but, really, I wouldn't contemplate any others repairs or problems *until* the belt has been re-tightened. What you're describing has all the earmarks of a loose belt. Just tighten it and see what happens.
