Security System Problems

We recently acquired a 1992 XJ6 4.0 Saloon Jaguar. It only seems to have one problem. We can't get the security system to shut off to start the car! Does anyone have any info about this problem? The manual is of no help. We will take it to a dealer if we must but hey, trying to save a buck or two!
