Default Series I Fuel Filter

About 3/4 of the filters I find for me Series I XJ6 are in-line type, but my car is a canister type. Anyone know if it is safe to switch to this inline type or will I run into issues? I assume the pumps will push fuel through just fine, but I want to be sure before I go ahead and do this, as I have issues with my car and don't need another. As an alternative, has anyone run an in-line filter ahead of the canister type, or does this cause too much resistance in the fuel lines? The only reason I ask is I can get in-lines through work for a decent price, and those canister type are harder and harder to find. Thanks!

i have a series 2, fuel was an issue with mine so i discarded the canister from the boot/trunk and fitted an inline filter in it's place, also i fitted another inline filter at the front just before it goes into the twin pipe for the carburettor's, i recently did a 2,200 Km round trip and no issue with fuel pressure running standard electric pump....tom
