Series II Steering Wheel, Options
Like to change out my Series II steering wheel but don't want to use anything too modern and importantly, that uses an adapter. What is out there that others have done that would work?? Something a bit smaller in diameter, thicker in the grip, maybe with leather or nice wood or both. Bolt right in, no modifications. Would something from an XJS or XJ40 work? I found a wheel from an 1989 XJS but I'm not sure it would work. Just don't want this bus size/style stock wheel.

The '89 XJS wheel is a popular choice and a direct bolt-on for a Ser III XJ6/12. I'm betting the same for a Ser II. I'm not aware of any change in shaft diameter, splines, etc.
I can't 100% confirm that, though. Cheers DD |

Someone please tell me it will fit a Series 2 as I just ordered it!!! Off a 1989 XJS.

Where did you order it from? I had a heck of a time finding mine.

It fits. What a difference!
I stopped off at my mechanic's today to check in my my 'new' 1977 XJ6. The XJS steering wheel fit perfect!!! An amazing difference in feel from the old 'bus' stock wheel. It not only looks a whole lot more current, it feels good in the hands too. Only downside it took the mechanic about an hour to get the old wheel off as the screws on the back of the wheel were not cooperative. He thought I wanted to salvage the old wheel. Not even. UNFORTUNATELY, I forgot to grab a couple photos to share. Next time!

i switched mine for one of these the different grain choices are great, and you can sneak a jag emblem inside for the horn

Got me wondering whether the XJ40 ones would fit to the series 2????
|
I know that the splines are the same. The series 3 wheel has a cover that slides into the back of the adjustment piece. The later wheels don't have this so you would see about 2" of the steering column. I have used the top of a black spray pan can with a hole cut in the top to cover it up. Fits perfect and looks great, used it for installing my nardi wheel. The only other issue is the horn is hooked up differently on the pre airbag wheels use a rod that goes down the center of the column and touches the horn button. The later wheels have the contacts built into the side of the wheel and column, they are round bands around the wheel and the column. So to sum up, the only issue is hooking up the horn.
