She passed!!
Nix passed her SMOG test yesterday with Flying colors, even better than last time which I was pleased with!

Although I had no real doubt she would, I didn't think the air injector pump I changed last year would make that much difference. Even the Tech was amazed she's running so clean. As with all the rest of my cars, I plan to drive the wheels off her until something happens that simply can't be fixed.
I'm thinking that would be something truly catastrophic. although I have seem some remarkable resurrections in here! So, unless someone T-bones us completely destroying the car (in which case I won't be in any condition to be concerned), the plan is to just keep fixing stuff that breaks. (';') |
I’m surprised California requires smog certification for your car. Anything older than 2009 in Washington is exempt. |
The cut-off build date for SMOG exemption in California is December 31, 1975. Nix's build date as stated on the door plate is January 1976. If she was One Month Older none of this would be an issue! The stated reason is to get Gross Polluters, those who could work for Vector Control, off the road (of course, in some minds, anything other than a bicycle is a gross polluter).
Any vehicle new enough to have a CHECK ENGINE light is passed without even testing if the light isn't on. However, if the vehicle is under suspicion for some reason, they run it through anyway in case someone bought one of the newer Code Readers and cleared the codes just in time for testing (they've got wise to that trick). This is the reason I've cultivated a trusting professional relationship with a Specific emissions tech and go back to his place every time. It helps that any critical work done is completed in his shop so he "Knows" what's been done to the vehicle. This time for example, I know he lifted the hood because he left hand prints on her fenders (hard to hide that on Shiny Black finish) but he didn't even blink at the choke I had wired open and forgot to correct before I arrived. He also didn't mention I need a new cat (I can't keep a cat in that car!), which issue will be resolved permanently soon as the weather settles for the season. (';') |

California is a special case. :) I lived there 29 years and well remember the stress and aggravation of getting your "smog cert". Cheers DD As Jay the Tech explained, the testing machine is connected to the Mother Ship's massive database via Internet, and must be calibrated every morning before testing can begin. Owners are no longer given a paper certificate (which presumably could be forged), but results are sent directly to BAR. All I need to do is include a check for a Pound of Flesh, return the statement to DMV and my new tags arrive in due time (which is May 15 but I do Not like things hanging over me undone!). At this point only my work truck (1974) is smog exempt. Good thing too considering what all has been done to it! (';') |
it's a money machine for the government. Not to mention R12 is banned EXCEPT for (you guessed it), the government.

I’m from California too and remember having to have my cars “smogged.” Washington followed California with their emissions requirements but then began exempting older cars. Just recently any car older than ten years is exempt. This is a new change because just last year I was required to have my ‘02 tested. But not anymore! :-) It’s kind of funny how we use some different words in Washington than they do in California. For example, no one here says they have to get their car “smogged.” That’s strictly a California phrase. I didn’t know that until I moved here. I said it once to someone and he looked at me and asked what I was talking about haha! We say “emissions tested.” There are other words that are different too. Some people here use the word, “pop,” for “soda” and I don’t think I ever heard that in California. Another thing that’s different in California vs. Washington is all the nice, expensive cars everywhere in California, especially in LA. And they’re always clean! It’s not like that in Washington. Yes, there are nice cars here, but they’re not a dime a dozen like in California. I notice it every time I visit. Our cars are always always dirty from October to March because it rains so much (though I like to think my cars are an exception). And our car washes here don’t even dry the cars! In California, the car washes pamper and vacuum your car. (No, I don’t take my Jags through the car washes!) At least our accents are the same up and down the west coast. |
My Jeep is up for renewal in April. do they think they will get my $'s til the last day or so??? The outgoing guv and the "progressive" legislature upped the fee!! but, it isn't a test year for the Jeep/.Big +++
There is a bill in the legislatures transportation committee. Move the barrier to 81 and earlier . It may never leave there!!! I wrote my "new" progressive rep. Newbie. The former one, a more than competent one lost in the anti DJT wave !!! Why not just set a 25 and older exemption. The worst of the older cars will just fall away. Save legislative effort for the real needs of the times.. Lots of them. Kudos to NIX and her stewardess, Elinor!!! Keep 'em rolling!! The guy next door brought home a short bed step side 4x4 step side 69 Ford. Much needed., But, SMOG test not one of them!!! Win/win!! Side bar: I'm on my third post op day! The cut-off is 35 years old here in NC so I have to get Blue Six inspected (safety inspection only) only ONE more time. The thing is It needs to be performed by the end of this month...

25yrs the magic number,, TEXAS, and you can opt for a single rear plate.. then run a vanity front plate!!

I consider myself fortunate to live in Ohio where there are no tests, inspections, etc for any car. And we don't have signs in Starbucks and McDonald's telling us their products cause cancer (like California does).
On the other hand those of us that were around in the 50s remember the much worse air polution back then. I am not a fan of government mandated testing but I am a big fan of keeping our classic cars in tip top condition. Two sides to every story. |
in Tennessee cars are licensed as Antique at 25 years with a permanent plate. Costs $32.75 and you never have to renew again. And they are smog testing exempt Forrever. The car must have the original engine! so lumps do not qualify. To qualify, the car is inspected by a dumbass who can't tell the difference between a lawnmower engine and a Ford Model T engine, so you can stick a "Jaguar" decal on the valve cover and you pass.

So my OEM oil fill cap (from the long-gone XK engine) emblazoned with JAGUAR might get me through?

odd how some places say things differently,, was talking on phone to a guy in California just yesterday ,(about jaguars) he said he is living in Communist California, he dont recommend living there!

maybe he should try living in Fascist Washington DC, the cost of living is about the same in both places.
