If it is the stick-on type then a heat gun will ease the peeling-off process.

If it's the rivet-on type, well, you'll have to drill the rivets.

So they did it both ways, no standardization?

None of the Ser IIIs came with factory installed side mouldings. They were all installed after the fact, usually by dealers using local suppliers/installers. So, no, no standard type.

I've yet to see a Series 3 XJ-6 or 12 with the stick on side moldings, all I have seen are the rivetted ones which were for the USA only.

Mine had them, and very useful they were too, stopping a lot of dings in supermarket car parks. They were black and lined up with the black bumpers front-rear, so looked the part. They were glued-on. As Doug says, use a hair dryer or not-too-hot hot air gun. You can also use dental tape as a way of cutting the glue whilst pulling gently. It needs two of you, of course, to do this.
