Some questions on making things work.

Hi all,
I am in the process of re-assembling my 82 XJ6 after having taken quite a few items off to fix things. First was the entire dash to get to the heater/ac box to replace the core, and then, since I was in there, I cleaned all the ducts and replaced all of the flap foams. Then I noticed a leak from the front, then rear windshields, reworked those by removing, cleaning, fixing and replacing the seals. Long story short is I need help hooking the horn back up. What wire goes into the little clip that makes the contact? What color is it and where does it come from, where does it go?
And the windshield washer pump? What trick do I need to do to make it actually pump the fluid and spray it on the glass? It's a TRICO made in England. Is that the problem?

Thanks

You should have a purple/black wire to the copper contact 'finger' on the side of the steering column. It's probably dangling around somewhere.

Washer pump: does it hum when you press the button?

Cheers

Doug, it doesn't hum, it buzzes! I have had it out and dis-assembled and bench tested with 12V. The shaft turns, the soft rubber "impeller" turns too, but I can't get any liquid to flow through at high(ish) velocity, as one would expect from a windshield washer pump. The leads are hooked up the only way they can be, so it must be turning in the right direction. The hoses are attached following the arrows and logic. The lines are all clear (blew through them), the nozzle is clear (again by blowing) Still no stream of liquid coming from the nozzles to get the glass wet. I'm stumped. I will resort to carrying a squirt bottle ;)

Thanks for the color of the horn wire, I will have a look this evening.

About the washer pump: I had the same issue. Like you, checked all the hoses etc. Stumped. Then discovered on a Series 1 the little, protruding jet things on the nozzle facing windscreen actually unscrew and come out. If so on S3, you might want to do that. Both mine were clogged with a white powder type stuff. Took a pin and scooped all out. Works now. I do have to press the button 4/5 times before the pump actually squirts, as though it has to build up pressure or something, but then it's fine and does it's job. The buzzing is normal, I think: they are noisy.

The pump probably has a one way diaphragm inside it, mine was doing the same so I fitted an inline fuel check valve near the resivior. The link below is for a 6mm one but when I bought mine they had a 4mm one listed.
Perfect on first push of the switch every time.

Thank you Doug for the wire colour. I did find it, though I had it plugged into something else. So the horn works now :) I have not had a chance to look at the washer pump again, but I will try the one way valve as 01xjr described.
