storing the car and new shocks
 

would it help my 1985 XJ6 Series III if i had the shocks replaced if she sits most of the year...i drive her only about 4 weeks a year, the rest of the time she sits in friends garage...would it be helpful if i changed the shocks to new shocks? the current ones seem fine but have about 120000 miles on them...looking for feedback if new shocks would ease the pain on the car for sitting on its wheels so oftne...

It would be better to take the weight off the wheels, as standing for months on end puts flats into them, and can damage the tyre carcase. Alternatively pump up the tyres to about 40-45 psi. Don't forget to let them down next time you take it out !

Are the shocks the originals ? If they are they are almost certainly past their best. Main thing that goes is the chrome finish on the damper rod with rusting which then damages the oil seal, and then it's "end of damper" as the oil leaks out.

I would say you need to check the shocks for oil seepage. If you see any, replace them as a set, front or rear, however this has nothing to do with helping the car whilst standing.

It's a sad reality but cars need to be driven, just like houses need to be lived in, or they die. When I have to store my cars I make sure I turn it on and drive it at least out of the garage and strait back in to not ruin the tires. But honestly the tires are the least of your worries. Sitting cars rust, inside and out, parts seize, components don't get any lube, seals get brittle, electrical contacts corrode. If you love the car, you'll find a way to turn it on if even for a short while at least once a month.
