SU Multiple HS8's Setting up and Tuning, step by step guide
Here it is finally, what a mission to get to this point. A very big thank you to Grant Francis(Grant Francis) & Ken (cat_as_trophy) for their word documents and advice.
Hopefully it will be helpful to some of you with step by step pictures.
you will have to download in 2 parts as the document was too big to do in one go.
If you want to remove carbys and replace serviceable items see word documents attached to post #13 of this thread
Regards, Clarke

Clarke,
A great write up.
I've added it the the FAQ's:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ck-links-5913/
If you need to amend the docs in the future, edit the attachments in your post #1 and the FAQ link will point to the new versions.

Clarke,
That is an AWESOME tune up of my basic write up.
The glass of Red is mandatory for Jaguar work, and I did omit that sentence, must concentrate more.
The test drive shopping list is AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE, and why would you live anywhere else.
I wish the diesel pump settings on the old Pug were that easy. Its a "Lucas Roto Diesel" pump, and the first word of the name has just blown all common sense out the window. At least I get a 2 week break from that thing.
Once again, AWESOME final paper.
I will PM you for an email copy to save at my end.

SU Multiple HS8s, Setting up and Tuning, a step by step guide
Bloody brilliant ... Clarke, you are a champion for seeing this through. Mine was just a gentle push; urged on to pick through my memories of SUs on XKs, most recently on the E-Type's triples, by a new member excited by his first Jag. To Grant must go a hearty thanks for sharing his considerable knowledge, data, and experience. What a legacy to share with others.
A big thankyou also, to Clarke's family whose patience in assisting yet another drooby Dad come to grips with weird computer challenges ... that all seem designed for the minds of teenagers but can be daunting at times for us mere adults. Thanks kids!
Clarke; you invite us to edit or correct any glitches, typos etc. Sure there are a few ... but I wouldn't change anything. It's all accurate. Perhaps some purist will point out a spelling mistake or two ... but in these days of robot generated text and automated call answering machines, its comforting to work with a step by step guide produced by humans for humans ... with the first person slipping through now and again to explain something one-on-one.
A standout for me is the precise and detailed photography that Clarke has brought to the narrative. If the old adage is true ... that a single picture is worth a thousand words ... here is ample proof. For a technical subject like this, good pictures are even more important, as they add immeasurable confidence to the next person undertaking Clarke's task.
And finally, thanks from all of us to our Rock ... our "wannabe convict"; mentor and good friend; super Mod Graham ... who has so promptly recognized and acted upon such a valuable group achievement.
STICKY ... FAQs ... Wow!!! next he'll organize world peace ...
Congratulations all round,
Ken

I've combined Clarke's two documents and converted to a single PDF:
SU HS8 Tuning and setting up.pdf
This compresses the original 12.3mB down to 3.3mB giving a faster download for anyone without a good broadband internet connection.

Hey Graham,
I'd like you to set up a poll that Clarke should get a far more crappy car ... so we can see a never ending supply of write-ups ... LOL. That pic of his Growler exiting the garage is of one beautiful classic Jaguar ... although I have to admit the "boot shot" at the end of his test drive was a cracker also.
Cheers, and thanks again,
Ken

Ken,Grant and Graham, Thanks for the comments. It would never have come together without Grant & Ken supplying a wealth of knowledge and Ken's cattle prod to get me motivated. Pretty much the words are left as they were originally posted, adding a bit myself here and there when I felt a bit of explanation would help when I was working through the process.
Trawling through the 300+ photos is what took most of the time, but photography has been a passion for 35 years, thank god for digital SLR's. Developing used to cost a fortune. Oh and the 12 hours today getting each photo down from 2.5mb each finally have the complete paper down to 8.1mb. Making each picture file 5% of their original size without loosing the definition.
update, thanks for the PDF conversion Graham,my original word doco was 162mb. No wonder I was having trouble posting it.
Ken, I took about 12 pictures of the XJ6 at the garage door,my photography is overkill. I never leave home without a camera(even on the bikes). And enjoying the fruits of the road test as we speak.

More crappy car?
This one has enough problems, the pictures look so much better than the real thing. Lighting, time of day etc all come into play. I have hundreds of pics of the car, you only see the good ones. Bonnet and roof are faded patchy panels and bits of well hidden bog here and there. And faded reargaurds. Have a look at the boot in the pics(with the old rego plate,579-HUF) before the boot lid was touched up was touched up.
It took me 3 days to do carby's, probably 80% of that time taking pics, going to pc to upload and check on full screen before moving on to next step.

Clarke, I would like to thank you and your colleagues for putting together
such a worthy tome ;o))
Over the years being involved with bikes with Amal carbs and Jaguars with SU's and other
cars with side draught Strombergs, I have found the use of one of those small electronic sonic cleaning baths invaluable for cleaning carb bodies, jets, needles and sundry bits and bobs.
Works extremely well in cleaning orifices that are otherwise impossible to get at ;o)
Once again, excellent work ;o))

Hi Graham, that was lightning fast.
Thank you for converting the latest doc to pdf
After this process and tuning the carbys my XJ6 is running smoother than it has since I purchased it. Still I think it idles a bit rough, but I don't have a yardstick to benchmark against (s1's are as rare as rocking horse **** in my street), my wife , kids and a mate think it is idling fine! . As i have said before, maybe I'm expecting too much from a 41 year old car?
It is a pleasure to drive either way.

Clarke,
I'm straining a 36 year old memory (that's how long ago it is since I had a Series I) but I recall it didn't idle absolutely evenly the way a modern ECM controlled engine does. It would build up a few revs over a couple of seconds and then drop again repeatedly. A bit like what we used to call 'hunting'.
Be thankful you don't have triple carbs to setup!

That is exactly as I would describe it Graham, when you stop at intersection it will drop to around 450 rpm then raise to 650 rpm over a couple of seconds and settle at 550 rpm, feeling slightly lumpy. I don't mind the lumpy idle, I expected a Jaguar to be smooth.
When I rode in these things in the 70's I was still at primary school and didn't care about the idle.
Cheers, Clarke
