Tach occasionally starts reading double + normal...why?

Tach occasionally starts reading double + normal...why?
Hey folks, car's a '73 S1 XJ6.
Everything's just peachy, save for the tach going into hyper-drive every so often.
It reads more than double what it should, usually when it's hot outside, not hot on the gauge which is never as it's all new, with alloy rad, electric fan etc.
Ideas?
