Tip to install door mirror gaskets quickly

Just wanted to pass along a tip that allowed me to fix a common cosmetic problem for under $20 and under 20 minutes. On my Series 3 door mirrors the rubber gaskets were cracked with chunks missing. I found the replacements on SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist part# BAC4120. But I put off forever the job of replacing them because it involved taking the door panels out, disassembling the mirror adjustment cable, etc. Then I hit upon the idea. I removed the two screws holding the mirror to the door, lifted it up an inch or so and snipped the old gasket (see photo) and it slipped right out. Then I took the new gasket, using a single edge razor blade sliced the new gasket in the same place. Popped it in, put the screws back in and it is good to go. The mirror holds the slit back together and you would really need a magnifying glass to see the cut line. If only every job was this easy.

But it takes maybe another five minutes total if you tease the mirror wires out of the door far enough to briefly separate the wire plug; then you can put the gasket in whole. Just need a zip tie when you reassemble the plug connection. (Just take care, when you poke the plug back through the gasket sleeve into the door, that you don't push the gasket into the door too. Then you *will* need to take the door card off. Don't ask how I know.) :icon_dunce:

yes, you didn't need to tear the gaskets, you can remove the mirror by removing the two large screws, then disconnecting tthe wiring plug, the entire mirror comes off like that. So get two new gaskets!! i.e., no need to remove the door panel at all.

My 79 has mechanical cables that move the mirrors. The later models, I understand went to electric controls. As near as I can tell you have to pull the whole cable out. Drivers side no problem. Passenger side - big job. Am I mistaken?

I assumed you had electric mirrors. The cabled ones are another story.

Interesting! So, an adjuster on each door card? Learn something new every day. Your way is far easier for those, of course!

Gasket BAC 4120
 
I was wondering if anyone had a CAD drawing of the above gasket. I am using the Jag mirrors in my Australian 1959 Holden Rebuild and need to modify the heights of the gasket to suit. I was just going to run an adapted drawing through a 3d printer. Any help would be appreciated.

hi,
the XJ-S uses a more substantial spacer-gasket used to level the mirrors in an otherwise impossible curvature of the doors. What you show is a seal-gasket, You might look into the.XJ-S spacers if the curvature is the problem.

Hi Jose the curvature is not the issue, it is the inclination and the mirrors need a substantial "tilt" to allow some manoeuvrability for the mirror within the frame. I have reached the limit in 2 directions.

All you have to do to change the gasket is remove the two screws and pull up the mirror to get to the first connector..(be sure not to drop it into the door!). It is easily disconnected.

I added the XJS outside power mirrors to my '71 XJ.
