Tips and Tricks for S3 XJ part 1 ( FAQ )

hello,

did you know that your Series 3 XJ came pre-wired for Fog (or Driving) lights?

for those of you who did not know it, here are the 3 steps:

1) look on the front and side of the Radiator, on the passenger side, for a pair of Red with Yellow stripe wires. Those are there to connect Fog or Driving lamps. The connector was taped over at the factory.

2) look under the front Bumper, the holes are already there for the lamp bracket bolts.

3) Now go to the parking and headlights switch, left corner of the dash.

If you pull the black plastic Knob off the switch's stem, there is a C clip. Remove the C clip with a small screwdriver or needlenose pliers. From now on, you can PUSH the lights switch whenever the main headlights are ON, and this will turn ON the Fog or Driving lights.

NOTE: some knobs came with set screws, look around the black plastic knob before you pull it.

This "push IN" circuit was designed for Fog lights, so when you push the knob in position number 3, (headlamps ON), the headlamps will automatically go OFF and the Fog lamps will come ON.

nice ehh? yeahh but I don't like it. I want to be able to turn all the lights ON if I want.

So I imported a European Headlights Switch from the UK. (the headlight switch sent to the USA in Series 3 XJ is very lame). The Euro switch allows more combinations, including a position for REAR BUMPER fog lamps, for example:

Euro switch positions:
1) OFF
2) parking lights only, (and Fogs if you want them on),
3) parking lights, headlights, (and Fogs if you want them),
4) parking lights, headlights, (Front Fogs if you want them), AND Rear Fogs,
5) Fogs only.

since the switch cannot tell front or rear, you can use the REAR FOG switch position for front Spot Lamps, like I did. Spot lamps and Headlamps will make driving at night a lot safer.

in the case of my car, I can have the High and Low beams ON, AND the Spot and Fog lamps, a total of 8 lamps, lighted like a Starship should. If I turn the Hazard Flashers ON too, everybody follows the Law and moves over as I fly by waving at them :-))

Other tips later gater.

Jose

What about the Series 2 (Daimler Double-Six Coupe 1978), my headlight switch has a position for front fog lights, but none are fitted, is the Series 2 pre-wired in the same way?

Thx Dave.

si, few cars were fitted with the Bosch fog lamps at the factory, but the wiring is there in both Jags and Daimlers, and obviously you have the proper switch so look for the wires, red and yellow wires, bottom front corner of radiator, right / passenger side, (on left-hand drive cars), look for a wire bundle sticking out with black electrical tape over it....don't forget to remove the C clip on the switch itself, then mount the fog lamps, wire them, and that's it. You'll need to align them at night in front of a wall with the car 25 feet from the wall.

the Ground wire from each lamp is screwed to the nearest screw on the bottom grille (parrilla), the grille below the bumper. The Positive/Hot wire from each lamp is connected to each of the two red/yellow wires. No Relay is needed, it's already there in the car, (the Headlamp's relay).

I have an extra pair of original Bosch fog lamps if you want to buy them, complete with Jaguar plastic covers, and mounting brackets, (no Daimler covers were ever available), the shipping to Espaņa from USA will not be cheap and Customs will probably charge you Tax when they get there. Maybe you can find a decent pair over there.

Great bit of info! I just picked up a 7" headlamp setup for my S3 and 5.75 fog bulb for the inside buckets. I'll do some rewiring to get my hi/lows on the 7" outside lamps and fogs in the inside lamps. The switch was my concern but this my have solved it for me.

Where did you get the 5.75 fog lamps?

Thanks to Joses info I got my front fogs wired up.

Took a few pictures as I was going along.....

red/yellow wire on the left hand side of the bonnet/hood....

and the same again on the right hand side (near the windscreen washer pump)

And finally the little c clip that you need to take off the light switch to allow the switch to be pushed in to access the final position

Slick, but probably illegal in the United Socialist Republic of California !!

D.... near all "different" things are.

Gotta have the main lights on when the fogs or driving light extras are on.

I have a pair of vintage Hellas that are period correct for my car. Although many of my past steeds have had auxiliary lighting, neither of my present ones do.

if in California the main Headlights need to be ON when your Fog Lamps are ON, then you can use the Euro Switch which lets you do exactly that.

hi Is this just a mood for the indicator lights for turn signals, which Is the part that relates to the main front headlights? That's the only thing I want to change.

Thanks

Thanks

"mod" I meant

Jose 01-08-2020 05:47 AM

mod means to modify.

the Sidelights are the marker lights mounted to each fender or "wing". In USA Jaguar XJ, those marker lights are "static", they are either ON or OFF, they don't do anything else.

I found a way to modify those marker lights so that they "blink" or FLASH with the Turn Signals while still retaining their static function.

What I think you want is to replace the outer headlamps with the 7" european headlamps, because USA XJ came with 5.25" headlamps. That is a modification done to many USA cars. You can purchase kits on eBay to do that.

Having said that, this is a buyer-beware matter because some of those kits are low quality with cheap plastic parts that do not fit very well and yet they cost too much for what they are

Thanks so much for the clarification @Jose, that explains alot. My xj6 is in Thailand, most probably direct from UK, Coventry as its a rhd and the blinkers do blink. Looking at some of those 7inch retro fits now. Without changing the lamps is there a way to just change over the bulbs as they are not sealed lamps.

if your 5.25" inch outer headlamps have replaceable bulbs, then yes, you can upgrade the bulbs to LED or HID and other types of super bright bulbs now available.
.
you will need to find out the type of bulb your cas has, then find an equivalent in LED, etc.

i suggest you start a thread at the forum for Series 1, 2, or 3 XJ (1968-1987), as other owners have already done this and you can get advice from their experience.

Good luck and glad I could help.

Big thanks,
Yeh I was on that part of the forum before and saw an interesting mod for fog lamps and it was a certain somebody that posted that gem.

Really cool to have such knowledgeable people on this forum willing to share tips and experiences.
When I do the changes I will post some pics.

what mod for fog lamps? the Euro Switch? or removing the C clip from the american switch to be able to activate the fog lights?
