Default Transmission leak

Hi everyone I have a very slight drip from what i am guessing to be the transmission oil pan. I have a new gasket so I figure I will start there. Do you refill through the yellow dipstick port? Should I use a specific transmission fluid?
thx in advance.

Yes, refill via the dipstick tube

You [should] have a Borg Warner transmission. It's widely accepted that Type F of Type FA is the most appropriate fluid. The original specification was Type G as I recall....but that spec was made obsolete decades ago.

On my 78 xj I put a little red epoxy film on both sides of gasket, spread
out with finger, then tighten up very lightly.
Let dry over night before filling.
Put 4 quarts in through the filler tube and check the fluid when warm,
do not put more then shows 1/4" on the stick or it will leak out.

A tip that might help.

Some folks think tighter is better on fastening tin to iron or alloy. Not so.

And it deforms the metal around the holes for the fasteners.

1. Result: Less effective clamping, voila leaks !

2. Fix. Use a small hammer and a backer. Tamp down the ridge around the hole ands restore a uniformly flat surface.

As a general practice, I apply a sealer only tot he part that comes off. And mostly for keeping a good quality gasket in place during the install.

A bit of British wisdom I picked up recently:
"If there are no leaks, there's no fluid inside."
