Understanding the Fuel Tanks system
 

I have look at and fixed the Fuel tank system on my 1981 XJ6 but I don't quite understand how it works. I know that the system is set for the left tank to be on with no voltage applied to the solenoids. I have look at the wiring diagram and notice that when the tank selector switch is pushed in or the right tank selected it activates all three solenoids. It looks like if the solenoid is just on and off then there would be no return to the right tank with the solenoid activated. Unless the solenoids can be on and off and the right tank solenoid is on with no power then when the power is applied it turns off??? I don't know if I am making any sense but it is a question I have. Maybe if there was a mechanical diagram of the solenoids open and close in each operation I would see it? Thanks for any comments. The return valves are 'handed'...left and right being different in their internal orientation. At rest (no voltage) the left side return valve is configured to be open while the right is closed. With voltage applied the internal 'gate' operates, closing the left and opening the right
