Unique Whips "Restored" (??!) XJ6 for sale on Tulsa CL
So I'm surfing the regional CL lists for all things Jag and stumble across this ad (I've got no financial or personal interest, investment, yada-yada-yada....)
1986 XJ6 JAGUAR RESTORED BY UNIQUE WHIPS Make Offer or Trade
So I remember watching this episode of Unique Whips (ONLY because of the XJ) (AND I hope its the last episode I ever watch) and I can't help think about what people will call "restored". I think they repaired a few things, gave it a good detail, but I sure wouldn't think it earned the description of "restored".
I'm not saying I wouldn't mind having the car or that it's not worth the neighborhood of the asking price. But I do question the use of the term Restored and am curious what others think about what constitutes a Restore VS a Renovation VS Repaired.

Yeah, the word "restored" is thrown about *****-nilly....to the point of now being meaningless.
The car looks like a very average used Ser III to me.
And the Ser IIIs were not 'hand built' cars any more than than earlier or later cars, nor more so than most any other car.
Anyhow.....
To me "restored' is when a car is taken down to the bare body shell and *every* part, system, sub-assembly is overhauled/repaired/replaced/refinished to as-new condition. Then reassembled.....at which point you DO have a hand built car.
Anything less than that and you have a car that has been 'freshened up' or 'refurbished' or 'partially restored' or 'rejuvenated'.
Cheers

There was an awful lot of labour in assembling a Series 3 Jaguar, the lead-loading of the body shell took several hours, but it was still assembled on a production line. The car looks nice and nothing wrong with "refreshed" cars. I have to say the engine compartment doesn't look as if it has been touched much.
Essentially, with a car like this you have to personally see it, inspect it, and test drive it, to make any sensible purchase decision. There really is no other way.

Lots of "editorial liberties" taken in the description. *6 not the last year, 87's were and hand built??? Frame off? Engine bay looks a bit raggedy for being overhauled 5,000 miles ago.
In 2001, my car was at a local speciality place, Gran prix Motors. Big attention getter was a prime XKE in primroae, wide wites on gleaming wires. Bonnett up to reveal the immaculate DOHC.
Well, my car was a 115,000 mile car. Detailed to the nines, it looked great. I probably paid a bit too much. But, I've never kept a car this long. No plans on changing that. Still looks just fine. And, my engine bay is a tad different. But, much cleaner!!!

Yeah, I paid too much for mine at $3K but honestly the way it got financed I practically got it for free; rolled it onto my wife's car loan, dropped her payment and interest rate then paid it off in 3 months (hurrah for US credit unions and Toyota's that build equity).
Anyway, I'd be hard pressed to pay much more than that for an SIII. They're great cars, surely. I wouldn't trade mine for the world even with all of its little issues, but as much as I love it and as many heads as it turns, it's still a daily driver because it's just another mass-market car.
