Vacuum port hooked up right?
 

Hi all, got a Series 1. Been reading Rick Astley's book Classic British Car Electrical Systems. The book is about Lucas systems, not Jaguar in particular, and he says the tube from the vacuum port attached to the distributor runs to the carbie (p. 100). If you look at the picture of mine though, it runs up to the intake side of the engine a bit back from the water pump.

I'm wondering if some of the ignition/timing issues I'm having is because the vacuum hose is in the wrong place.

If it ought to run to the carbie a follow-up question is: What goes onto that port at the engine intake where the tube now is? (I do have a port on the front carbie -- not the rear -- and it's plugged).

Anyone know best place to read up on the vacuum system?

Could people look at their own set up and give me some pointers?

Should have added: I have the Stromberg carbies, with the stock US emissions set-up.

Vacuum take off points
 

I have 3 vacuum take off points on my intake manifold that I can see in the dark after beer o'clock.
one just behind the water temp sender that goes to the brake booster, one between the carbys that goes to the heater tap then on to a vacuum tank behind the brake booster. The third goes to the trans for kickdown.
The vacuum hose from the dizzy goes to the rear carby.

Hope this is some help. Can you tell us where the vacuum pipe attaches,on my car there is nothing in that area blanked off or otherwise.

I think my vacuum set up is all messed up. Tomorrow -- beer o'clock, as you put it, is way too advanced here tonight -- I'll be at my garage out back with this computer and your photos trying to get clear about how the hoses are set up but it ain't much like yours. Part of the problem here is the emissions stuff/carbies for US market.

Haynes manuals come in for a lot of stick but recently I got a newer edition and it's got some great photos early editions don't. On p. 68 it says the vacuum control does go to the inlet manifold, just as mine does. So, that's good and maybe the Astley here isn't a good guide to Jaguars (though his book is great; packed with info on electricals). However, the Bentley manual drawings do show vacuum hoses which my carbies simply don't have.

As I say, more tomorrow, but huge thanks for the pics, they'll help me get started.

Apart from my set up and the Bentley manual I have no other ideas. Pretty much the Bentley manual is the same as my set up.
