Default Want to buy XJ6 in memory of my Father

One of my favorite memories was driving in my father's British Green XJ6 he had when I was a kid. I believe it was somewhere in the 1980-87 range. It was a magnificent beast, despite the AC never working and the car overheating from time to time. I'm certainly biased but I believe it's one of the most beautiful and timeless cars ever made.

I'm looking to purchase an XJ6 in the next couple of months. I'm in LA, and will need a good mechanic. I don't have the time, nor inclination to do anything other than basic maintenance myself.

From my brief research, I can find a nice example in the 12k - 25k range. Any tips as to where I should look? Should I contact a broker? Anyone know of any good mechanics in LA?

I'm looking at purchasing a green, white, or possibly brown XJ6. Any advice is much appreciated.

I bought a 1982 XJ6 4.2 at the end of last summer. More in memory of my youth than of anything else. I had a lovely XJS HE back in 1987 and loved that car but I agree with you - there is no more stylish car ever than the XJ6.

I looked around a lot before purchasing mine. It's a very standard S3 4.2. No sun-roof, AC or any other fripperies to go wrong and steel wheel trims rather than alloys.

It does have a completely original chassis (no welding or rust), a newish engine and gearbox and a rust free body - pretty hard to find in the UK but it should be a lot easier for you. Although I would have loved an XJ12, on the theme of reducing complexity I decided on the XKE engine.

The car isn't quick but it's an absolute delight to waft around in. Quiet, smooth progress with a level of comfort you just don't find in modern car. Every time I walk towards it, I marvel at how low and sleek it is, and every time I walk away from it I look back to admire it.

Sorry for the gushing post but I'm in love with this piece of metal and I'm sure you will find one you feel the same about - particulary with the association of your father. Spend a weekend reading through the posts in these forums, seek out and digest JagCare 3 by Gregory Andrachuk, then go looking. My car is Chestnut Brown and gorgeous....

I soon replaced the Daimler grille, it's a lovely piece of work but the Jag grille changes the whole stance of the car.

And a set of original Cibie's.

Let us know how you get on.

I have a 1987s XJ6 Series III you might be interested in. It was sold new in Newport Beach and spent it’s whole life in California. Complete documentation since new and is in excellent condition both mechanically and cosmetically. During my ownership I replaced all the woodwork with new burled walnut pieces. The color isn’t what you mentioned but it is a beautiful “Artic Blue Metallic” with tan leather. It drives like new as all the mechanicals have been completely gone through. I’m sure you won’t find many nicer cars.

The car is at a large consignment dealer in Indianapolis Indiana. Here is a link to the car on their web site. 1987 XJ6 series III. Private Message me if you have questions.
BTW, Classic Showcase in Oceanside CA is a top of the line restoration and service facility for classic Jaguars. Kind of far from LA but worth checking out.

I drool. How could you ever part with such a gorgeous animal? They are all almost extinct! I just love the way she shows her beauty with every turn (and wink) she makes. Keep her!!!

Thanks. But too many cars (or not enough parking spots). I am keeping my 1979 series III in the original Cotswold Yellow.

What part of LA are you in? I may be able to find you a Series 3. I just picked one up yesterday and they’re all over the place in price range. Here’s my 1986. As for mechanics, its all going to boil down to where you live. Im in the valley so I use York and Lancs in Chatsworth or Steve Jaguar in Canoga Park. They both have good experience with vintage toys.

Wow, that is such a beautiful xj6. Congrats! I'm in the valley as well (burbank), so your recco could work for me. Mind sharing mileage and what you paid? If not, no worries.

Thank you!

135k miles, 1 owner car. Paid 3500 for the car and will be putting in another 2k over the next few months in getting it summer ready. Id sell you this one but it needs fan clutch, fan, valve cover gaskets, and t stat. Ive been driving it for 3 days straight, and all is well, but the AC is not working so Ive decided that I should prep it for Summer. I will let you know if I find another one. Btw there are 4 on CL right now. 2 VDPs for under 11k

For 12-25k, I would let mine go…. But would cost you more to make it legal in cali. The lt1 in it ain’t exactly what you would call smog legal!! but oh she’s fun!
