What is this, and why does it look like this?
 

Okay, so I've begun the tear-down on the cylinder head in my 84 XJ6. I'm just about ready to pull the head itself, despite the fact that the bottom middle bolts on the exhaust manifold were designed so that you can't get a socket in there . . .

Anyway, As I was disconnecting hoses and wires and so on, I discovered this:

I'm not 100% certain what this is. It looks a lot like the fuel cooler, but is obviously not. It had a hose connecting it to a box on the back of the alternator. At first I thought it was just clogged, but it actually seems to be welded. Is this correct, or do I have something seriously wrong?

That's the air injection pipe. There should be a hose and a check valve there. The check valve probably failed, causing the meltdown.

The hose goes to the diverter valve on the back of the air injection pump...not the alternator

I'd already removed the short hose piece connecting it to the pipe. I'm assuming this is something I really should get fixed as well.

And your engine is disgustingly clean. Thank you for making me feel inferior . . . :icon_rant:

Although, if I don't need to worry about passing emission, does it matter?

On closer examination it looks like the pipe has been intentionally plugged, Yes ?

Anyhow, the engine doesn't mind if the system is removed or defeated so, since you don't have emission testing, I wouldn't give the matter another thought
