Default Wheel bearings

Sooo. I am new to owning a vehicle with greasseable wheel bearings. So I am curious how often do y'all grease yours and do you guys pull then off and clean the old out? And what type of grease is best?

I used to remove, clean, and repack wheel bearings every 15k miles. That was years ago. We can choose from higher grade greases these days that hold up better and stay stuck to the bearings longer.....so it's every 30k miles for me nowadays.

I use the red synthetic high-temp grease that you can find under any of the usual brand names.

Cheers

I agree with Doug.

I always repack the wheel bearings when I first take ownership of any car, than I know what is what.

I then give 4-6 pumps of the hand held grease gun every year, and thats it.

I also use the Synthetic Wheel Bearing Grease for everything that needs greasing.

Thanks for the replies guys, I haven't heard any signs of worn out or bad bearings so I'll just make sure they are nice and clean an well greased for the scorcher of a summer thats ahead.

Default consider the seal

Consideration also should be given to the inner wheel seal. If the seal is worn it will allow grease to exit and water and road debris to enter. In that case the grease wont last very long. The older series 1 and 2 seals tend to dry, shrink and crack. Also when the grease exists it tends to get whipped on to the brake rotor, contaminating the pads and reducing break function noticeably.
The newer replacement seals are made with modern materials and seal better which leads to much longer service intervals. So just dont simply repack...also replace the seal and check the pin for a grove where the seal rides.
