Wheel lug nut torque pressure and pattern

Hope you all had a great little breather and have re-energised!

I need to take off a wheel and would like to know what lbs are per nut and if there is a particular pattern?

Last time i had one done it was taken off and on by a garage. so no idea what they decided was "correct"

I can't remember, offhand, what the official torque spec is. But, but years now I've been using 65 lb-ft and nothing bad has happened. The usual across-the-center-star-pattern is fine

Probably is somewhere, never looked.

I simply firm them all in a criss/cross pattern, and tighten with the FACTORY supplied wrench.

WHY

Flat on the road somewhere 100's of miles from help.
All ya got is the factory tool, and some gorilla with a rattle gun has torqued those suckers to stupidity.

If you have LOTS of beer, care factor is ZERO, but you still cannot get the nuts off.

I always remove and retorque MY WAY after tyre fitment idiots have been at any of my Jags.

Well, not Hundreds of miles, but certainly well off the beaten path up a logging road.

After that, I either Sternly warn The Boss I won't stand for such over-tightening nonsense, or stand over the "tech" in question making him Really nervous so he grabs an honest Torque Wrench for final tightening, and asks me what torque I prefer.

According toThe Blue Book (official Jaguar ROM) 45 pounds. For my Xj-40 Teardrop rims, 65-70 pounds.
I let them off with a torque or 65 pounds and we're all happy.

Hi Chrisleg,

I've always used common sense.

Tighten in a cross pattern way until tight.

Then work around with one final 'tug' on each wheel nut or 'lug'

Poorly trained / used (over tightening) 'rattle guns' in mechanics workshops can actually weaken / destroy wheel stud bolts.
