Default windshield stalk no detent left

My wiper stalk won't stay in place as the detent is worn out. Often when I use the turn stalk the wiper stalk moves and I get a clean windshield whilst making a corner. Also, often the stalk just sort of flops around and nothing activates at all. It takes some savvy fidgeting and holding my tongue just right to get it to work at all. So, I know I need to replace something, likely the detent area that is on the steering column but don't know what part to look for. Suggestions?

It's been a few years so some of this is a bit foggy.

As for the wiper switch itself, well, it's one item where Lucas really does live up to the reputation of low quality. I think the originals were higher grade than the replacements. Anyhow....

I recollect taking one apart and somehow (this is the foggy part) overhauling it, so to speak. Whatever the problem was must've self evident at the time. I think the halves are riveted but I used screws to put it back together. You could gie it a try but be ready to buy a new one.

As for the generally flimsy action of the stalks.....

You might be missing some screws. Foggy memory again, sorry. If you take the shrouds off (more on that in aminute) I think you'll see 2 or 3 placed where screws are used to hold things together a bit...sorta like screws into a small framework that's part of the signal switch. Something like that.

I DO remember replacing some missing screws and it firmed up the action of both switches quite a bit.

Removeing the shroud is easier if you lower the column a bit...maybe 1/2 inch. Just loosen (don't remove) the nuts that hold the colum up....you see 'em

The shrouds have threaded brass inserts that will break out if you over-tighten the screws. I recall 4 shroud screws: 3 external and visiable from underneath the lower shroud and one internal, holding the upper shroud to a bit of sheet metal...probably the bracket that's part of the signal switch

Sorry for all the vague information. Once you dig in I think it'll all be self apparent

Cheers
DD
