X40 suddenly lost reverse/newbie
Hi all,
I've lurked a lot and have spent hours poring over the collective wisdom of these forums as I consider a Jag (for the first time). I currently daily drive a 996 Porsche 911 and am looking to take some miles off her (70+ a day). I started thinking about Jag because I've owned almost everything else and because I think they look absolutely wonderful. Anyway, I am looking at a clean '86 Xj6, owner started to restore/refresh it. One day reverse just went out. Fluid is fine. I'm thinking about rolling the dice on this car...I have owned a lot of European cars that have various adjustments/solenoids that can cease to function rather suddenly. However, I would appreciate any insight as to what I should be looking for an what the odds might be that this is something minor and not cataclysmic. Thanks!!! Dave |
*Might* just be a sticky shuttle valve in the valve body.
*Might* just be a band out of adjustment---but in that case you'd typically lose one of the forward gears as well (I can't remember which at the moment...probably 1st gear) I'd brace for a transmission overhaul Series III Sedans are great cars ....the most modern of all antique automobiles...but just about any one you buy is likely to need at least some remedial work...perhaps quite a bit. And watch for rust ! Cheers and welcome aboard. Cheers DD |
By the way, you should post in the Series I-II-III section
