XJ-6 VIN #

Hi, I own a 1987 XJ6 and have a problem distinguishing between 2 VIN numbers on the car. The # on the drivers door is different from the metal stamped VIN # in back of the engine compartment on top of the firewall. I think these numbers should be the same but I'm not sure. If anyone is knowledgable about Jag VIN's please let me know. Thanks

RE: XJ-6 VIN #

the correct VIN is the one in your current Registration. also you can do a CARFAX search using both numbers - who knows what you might find out.

At some point perhaps a previous owner replaced the driver's door and just left the old tag on it. This was not uncommon due to rust.

RE: XJ-6 VIN #

mine is a 1984 and it has no rust, it does have a lot of rustproofing.but who knows, anything is possible, and if the car is from the north, rust is definitely a problem, but 1987 models had even morerustproofing. But I agree, the door might have been replaced, in which case the VIN in the car's registration should match the one in the firewall.
