xj6 III littlerattling noise from valve covers
so after listening to the video you may say there is definitely something wrong with the sound of engine ?
my advice to you XJfourty is:
1) do not try to repair what you don't know needs repairing.
2) if it is the tappets, and you have no experience doing a job like
that, don't mess with it, there are considerations that need to be
kept present, you could easily cause damage to the cylinder head or the engine.
I have been messing with cars since 1969, and I don't mess with engine internals, I let the experts do it. Sure, the job is easy, for those who know how to do it. Even I would not dare drill into the aluminum cylinder head, not me thank you.
If I have to replace a belt, a power steering pump, a hose, an alternator, a starter, a water pump, a radiator, new valve cover gaskets, a heater valve, oil & filter change, and many other things EXTERNALLY, I will do it, but messing with the engine internals? no way Jose.
If the engine is running fine, be gentle with it until you find someone who can pinpoint the noise and fix it within your budget.
Keep checking the oil.

Have you eliminated the ancillaries yet? Could be as simple as a bad bearing in alternator, water pump, ps punp etc.. remove all belts and see if it still makes the noise, ( not that i can hear it on my.pbone that well, but i think i hear a scraping sound)
P.s. do not run engine more than 30 secs or so without water pump spinning!!!!!

yes it is that scraping sound. the water pump is new. I do not think it is a bad nearing because what happens is that the scraping sounds shows up after the engine is hot.
When the engine is running cold it is barely noticeable at all.

yes he is working on jaguars since 40 years. He does only jaguars. There were all kind of classics jags there xj6 like mine, j12, xj40 and even one E type. he works also on X300 models.
So far he is the best I could find. He is a 60+ guy and worked most of his life in these cars. I feel like confident on him. He seems really good.About the price... everthing here is crazy expensive. I'll let you know about his price...

yes he told me about $300 for the timing chain. I can't say it is a good price or not looks like the average in bay area.
There re other urgent things to take care of. The front shocks need to be replaced and the coolant fluid expansion tank is leaking, needs to be replaced.
BTW when you lived in California on those years I was attending my first years of elementary school in Italy.
that also was when I start falling in love with the xj6 III

Best study up on your find. Lottsa places to look. Here and on Jag-lovers.com as well. Get as many publications as you can. Needed for either DIY or understanding how to relate with the professional tech. And to avoid the crooks. Knowledge is everything.
Jose:
It was a "sticker shock" when we came in 75. It has increased a whole lot since.
Every budget cost estimate I do, shows up low.
OTH, a great place to live. I can only envisage a couple of "better" places. One is in crisis. The other great, but for me too late, the Sierra's
about two hours from here.
My son and his SO have a place there as well as local. Great local....
