XJ6 S3 Brake Lights Out/Wires from brake switch

Brake lights won’t work, fuse is ok, other tail lamps work. Someone has previously “re wired” stuff. From brake switch there is a solid green wire and green w purple stripe, both continue on as installed by factory. Solid green wire goes through aftermarket junction box that also has a red and a brown wire joined together but cut off just outside junction. Random brown and red wires were bundled in fuse box area, had clips to connect to glass fuses and have inline modern fuses. They were not connected to anything.

Looks to me like that "scotchlok" connector has cut the green wire. Those are evil creations.
Get rid of the unused wiring and splice the damaged factory wire with a butt connector.

I was there. I bodged a fix.. Not good. Later found the real culprit. The ignition switch.
The left under scuttle fuse rack is powered from it!! Undid bodge., back to factory. All is well.

There are two brake switched operated by the pedal!!!! Opposite function!! Different tasks!!

1. Closed til pedal applied. Disables Cruise control!!

2. Open til pedal applied. Powers brake lights!!

3. I prefer solder and shrink tubing to make splices. Some say crimped connectors
are best !!!

Carl,
Vampire clips get the Garlic treatment here!

If I can, if there's room, I use uninsulated butt connectors and then solder them.
I'veNever had one fall apart.

JMSR, I might be out of sync with your findings but: brake light relay pulled, do lights go out?

If yes, check the trigger pin connected to OG wire from brake switch. The brake on off switch grounds this wire to trip the relay and turn lights on.

wire is shorted to ground somewhere including the switch.

If no, there's a short to battery inside or on other side of brake relay.

John, I think you're talking about some other model. A Series III sedan has no relays in the brake light circuit

Cheers
