XJ6 series lll 1985 wont start
I just purchased the car. I was told it ran then suddenly it won't start. New fuel pump, new battery, new gas, it has spark, no fuel to the injectors... (I read somewhere it needs a deep charge battery. ??) Going to take the time to play with it this weekend. Any advice?

mine has a standard battery, i would check to see if fuel pump is actually running, put car in D and turn key to start, with trunk open you should hear fuel pump running.

Yeah, it is running. Fuel not getting to injectors. Sparks and fires with starting fluid.

hi,
remove the Cold Start Injector (CSI), hold it away from face while someone else cranks the engine and see if it is spurting any fuel. (it does not "spray", it is a "spurt"). Battery: all you need is the correct cranking amps battery and fully charged, no such thing as a "deep charge battery" needed. open or download the attached PDF file to go through fuel system checks. |

To clarify..... Fuel not getting TO the injectors? If the pump runs then there should be fuel to the injectors....unless the filter is totally plugged. Or fuel injectors not operating? Are they clicking? Do you have a 12v test light? Cheers DD |

Sorry, yes there is fuel getting there. Yes I already tested for 12v. Starting to think a bad ECU??
|
Thank you!
Thank you so much. I will look through this.

Ok, good. Fuel to the injectors and 12v to the injectors. Now all we need is a ground signal from the ECU to trigger the inecjtors. 1) At the coil "-" post there should be a white/black wire running aft along the water rail. is it intact, with a good connection? This is the trigger wire to the fuel injection ECU 2) At the rear of the water rail is a bundle of black ground wire for the fuel injection system. Is the connection clean and tight? Not broken wires? 3) Remove the connector to the coolant temp sensor (for the ECU) and jump the two terminals inside the connector with a paper clip. Any change? (This is not the forward-most sensor on the water rail. It is either #2 or #3, going aft) Cheers DD |
Thank you. No, nothing changed. Replace ECU?
|
Did you end up replacing the ECU?
For a few months I had no ground signal being sent to the injectors of my XJ6 when using the original ECU. I replaced it with a spare ECU that I found and the car fired up straight away. Out of curiosity, I then connected up the original ECU again and discovered that it too works properly. Bad connection of some sort? Hard to believe that something so simple was preventing the car from starting all this time. |
