Default XJ6 SerII Sending unit location

Fuel gauge doesn't work so I am trying to to troubleshoot the sending unit. Pulled the tail light to check the wires and was greeted by a flat smooth gas tank. I thought I had read that it was here, but it isn't and looking in my haynes manual it looks like it is near the filling neck. Is that the correct place and what is the best way to get at it?

Well, it will not be up by the filler neck, (no way to connect up the wiring on the production line), but it will be at the other end of the tank. Look for a 6" circular plate at the back of the inner wheel arch, as I think this is where earlier cars had it. I may be wrong though

Thank you Fraser, it was in the wheel well. The gauge seems work on the tank I have that isn't hooked up. I think for my good side the float may be sunk.
