XJ6 SU fuel pumps leaking
I have spent the last 2 months (on and off) trying to get the two fuel pumps on my series 1 working properly. The easy part was setting the points and getting the pumps to actually pump fuel and stop when the float chambers were full.
Now to reduce the risk of fire, I have part filled my fuel tanks (which I took out for inspection) with diesel fuel. The pumps work fine on this but I have been chasing a series of leaks - first of all the banjos, then the diaphragm on one pump, then then one of the fuel hoses. The leaks are now very much reduced except for a very slow leak from the surge chambers. I have made now paper gaskets for these (the bell part on lower right of photo), but there is still a very slow weep from both pumps. I am going to try a different type of gasket paper next, but the question I am now asking is "does diesel fuel leak more easily than petrol?" ie., if I run petrol through these pumps, is it less likely to pass the gasket? I cannot seem to find new gaskets available for the surge chambers, and it does not help that the seal depends on one central screw. I would have thought that Petrol world leak more. It tends to weep from the silliest of places on carbies, but, I have not done the comparison. Have you tried SU MIdel,in Sydney. Home |

They had what I needed for a 1948 Rover P3, +ve Earth critter, last year, and also some hints, worked for me. |
I use Loctite No3 non hardening sealant on everything. Bikes, cars, washing machine, dish washer etc.. Oil, water fuel no problem.
I put it on anything that has to seal and have done for 30+ years. I paint a coat on both surfaces before putting the gasket or o ring on. Carbies, water pumps, sumps, frost plugs, thermostat housing etc, etc. Never had a leak where I have used it. It works with used gaskets too, I have done that a few times to get out of trouble. You can see it on the water pump and frost plugs in the pics. Wipes off with shellite. (White spirit) Relatively cheap at Supercheap or Repco. I'm on my third bottle since 1989. The hardening one is No.4, so looking for No.3 you won't go wrong. And a shameless plug for the forums. The bottle in the pic is at least 8 years old, a bottle of this stuff lasts for ever. In olden days Permatex red and Permatex black were our products. Former non hardening, the latter very much so.. Plus Indian head shellac!!! Carl |

Well after four months and many attempts at repair I gave in and ordered new pumps. Even after buying some of the recommended sealant (good stuff but make sure you have white spirit or meths for clean up) and using it on all the joints on both pumps, I still had a leak. A very small leak (in both pumps) which only showed after sitting under the head of fuel in the tank for a few days. It was just the finest of weeps. I think the leak was from the diaphragm in both cases. Not going to take a chance on a fire in my boot so two new electronic AZX1307 EN pumps were obtained and fitted. They look nice and original. This is the largest single expenditure I have made so far on one item for the car.

BLUE HYLOMAR is also good for stopping fuel leaks. Used in racing where dry connections are critical. Made by PERMATEX.

Ugh, the last bale of hay that came here for Billy was bound with cord?? Not wire.
Not many older wire coat hangers left?? Another resource, lost!! Need to toe a part together. Inelegant use of an elegant product. Safety wire!!! Another. needed to replace a solar powered LED in a plant. Old one gone?? Post remained. After a lot of elegant ideas, I backed down a notch or more. Hose clamped staff to post. Splice lost in the greenery. A couple of days of sun charged it. Nice bluish light last night. I've a few out front. Pleasant... Carl. |
