1985 XJS H.E. - Engine Compartment Mysteries
 

Good Morning Gurus!

As I continue working my way from Boot to Bonnet restoring electrical functions I have found myself in the engine compartment and have a few questions about things I have found:

First, on the driver's side (LHD) we find this unit disconnected...

What is this and what should be connected to it?

Next, on the passenger side (LHD) we find an empty relay socket...

Sitting in a hole near the front of the passenger side air intake. Should it even be here? If so, should there be a rubber grommet in the hole to hold it tight?

I only know the third. It is a solenoid air valve that lets extra air into the inlet manifold when the airconditioning compressor kicks in. This is to prevent the car possibly stalling when stationary in traffic when the compressor starts up.

FWIW, the top one looks like an aftermarket non-factory item to me.

Thank you, Greg! Is the solenoid in the correct location (air filter housing) and should it be secured with a rubber grommet?

In other news, the orphaned part mounted to the left fender well turns out to be a 5 ohm ballast resistor. Anyone want to venture a guess as to why a PO would have had need for that in the engine compartment?

yes grommet required

#1 is an aftermarket ballast, as you found, and the only reason I could imagine, is he had issues with the Ignition system, OR, he drank too much and fitted it to the wrong car, then forgot why, makes more senmse, as there is NOTHING in that HE that requires that thing.

#2 looks like the socket for the OE LH electric fan "diode pack relay". Most have been removed, and the LH electric fan wired direct to the A/C circuit. OR, that fan is playing up (common), so the quickest way to stop the gremlins, is to remove the relay that controls it.

#3 Explained, and depending on market, MAY be part of the original 15 timer fiasco, and again, most have been "de-timed", and that solenoid used for other things, as Greg explained.
