Default 1992 XJS A/C warm and only blowing thru defroster

Hello everyone,

I jut purchased a 1992 XJS. Found a couple of issues I can't just figure out.

1) A/C only blows warm thru the defroster vent.

2) Radio is blank, security light flashes red. Tried putting the rest code in, but nothing happens.

Any advice?

A/C warm --> could be anything from a loose wire on compressor to simple gas recharge to compressor/lines/dryer/exchanger needs replaced. Did the A/C ever blow really cold and now suddenly it doesn't? or it's never been cold while you've had the car ? Does the compressor clutch relay work ? (To check this open the hood. turn ignition on. Move fan switch from off to low..... should be a distinct loud single click noise coming from under the hood)

Only blowing through demister vent, meaning it's not blowing through the center vent ? It should only blow cold air through the center vent when set to full cold (at any fan speed) Again, did it ever do it and now it's suddenly stopped ? The center vent opening and closing is controlled by a vacuum solenoid which is behind the right hand side of the center console. For the center vent to open, the demister vent needs to close first, so your problem may actually be the demister vent. Again, it's solenoid driven. These solenoids tend to fail.

My personal A/C story goes as follows.... never worked since I got the car. compressor was shot. Got it and the lines replaced. Now blows ice cold. Center vent wasn't working because the demist vent solenoid had failed. Replaced that, center vent works perfect now. Swapped out the stupid 3 piece center vent for the improved 2 piece design from a later 95 car. I can now maintain "very cold indeed" even on low fan speed in the California summer sun

Radio --> No clue. I swapped out the Jaguar one for a more modern aftermarket system a long time ago

Easiest way is to measure the resistance across the terminals of the solenoid...... a good one will read around 30ohms. A bad one will usually read open circuit.

There is quite a bit of work to get to them. Remove the side trim at the front of the centre console. Remove the airvent that you have just exposed. The solenoids are upside down as a pair on a metal plate behind the airvent you just removed. You should be able to pull the wires off and test the resistance with them in situ.

This is what they look like..... http://www.ebay.com/itm/JLM1126-1987...#ht_4307wt_463

It's the vacuum end thats nearest the camera.... the 2 electrical connections are at the other end
