1993 Jaguar XJS Coupe "Sport"

I'm confused and post this new thread as I could not find an existing thread that allows Members to post "what is this model" type questions?
This 1993 XJS Coupe is posted by the seller as a "Sport" model. As i have not heard of this term previously, I'm intrigued as to what specifications designated the"Sport" label?
The speedometer has the word "sport" labeled as does the inlet manifolds decal "Jaguar Sport V12". The owner states that the "original silver Asprey number plate is there" presumably referring to that esteemed London jeweler?
The VIN number is shown in theses photos however, according to my "crib" sheet, the 7th digit "3" should designate a 4.2 liter 6 cylinder engine and not the obvious V12?

Here's another "Sport"

Further to my posting, here is another XJS Coupe "Sport" offered for sale as a project. I've since found out that the 7th position digit as "3" can be either a 4.2 liter 6 cylinder or a 6.0 liter V12. I guess that the 6 cylinder "Sport" model was sold in the UK and the V12 here in the USA?

In the late 80's and early 90's Jaguar partnered with Tom Walkinshaw and formed Jaguar Sport at Bloxham, Oxfordshire. They built the XJ220 super car, and then made a Jaguar Sport version of the XJS. It had a different version of the 6.0 V12, and a unique injection management system. Both are different from the later production 6.0. There were a number of options to customize these cars that were unique to the range, and obviously built in limited numbers. It's a unique car!

XJR-S times 2 for sale

Thanks for your reply. Although the red XJS has had the engine removed, it is still being sold with the car. The 186893 car is intact and original it seems and according to window sticker, the engine in that car is indeed a 6.0 liter with the Zytech engine management system which would certainly be unique and confirm it is a TRW model XJRS. See this article
Jaguar XJR-S - Autocade
The seller has both cars listed in this thread if anyone is interested in these XJRS cars

I would be really hard pressed to buy that black one for 12,000 dollars, given that it has been clearly parked in the ninth circle of hell and needs a 10k paint job- a black/dark car need a quality job to look “right” and new headlamps. I can only imagine what some parts of the interior we are not seeing look like. I don’t know why anyone would park a beautiful car like this baking in the sun with no cover and no protection. Such a shame

EDIT: I just read about the mechanical issues in the description. This car may be rare, but with paint, trimmings and repairs, buyer is looking at 25k on top of asking prices. It may be an XJR-S , but it’s nit a E type quite yet

I don't ever recall a 4.2 litre 6 cylinder XJS; that was an XK/XJ engine.
The XJS came out with a V12 and then latterly a 3.6 and then 4.0 6 cylinder lump.

I agree with the critical loss of these "rarer" XJS models like the XJR-S. The seller of both of these cars is way off the mark with the asking $18,000 for both. Possibly an offer of $12,000 or less might get a positive response. I seem to think that the seller intended to build-out the red car using the black car as the donor. I also noted that the red car comes with some TWR like fiberglass front panel moldings.
The fate of XS cars in the US is due to the fact that they were sold in large numbers to well-heeled buyers who could part with $140,000 (sticker $74,000 plus the $3700 gas guzzler tax with dollars converted from 1993 to 2019 dollars). The next owners and from those on saw them as relatively inexpensive exotic sports cars until they were confronted with the reality of owning and maintaining a rapidly depreciating object.
Fortunately, some are avoiding this fate.

If the car (forget the red one, I mean the black one) is a real genuine TWR 6 litre car with the TWR-developed, non-OEM Jaguar 6 litre engine, then it is pretty rare and desirable and worth a lot. The solid silver Asprey's plates make it even more so. BUT, I would not be surprised if it was actually a "normal" 6 litre XJRS - ie a facelift Jaguar 6 litre engine with TWR add-ons such as the Zytec ignition etc etc. As far as I know, and on this matter I know pretty little for certain, there were two versions of the 6 litre engine carrying TWR logos:
The first was when TWR expanded the 5.3 litre engine themselves and offered all sorts of go-faster goodies as a separate operation. This engine had different bore/stroke dimensions from the later Jaguar OEM 6 litre, even though it had the same capacity.
Second was when Jaguar did a 6 litre version, which JaguarSport (a joint company with TWR) also offered go-faster bits for. This engine was identical dimensionally with the "normal" 6 litre in facelift cars, but it did have Zytec ignition and doubtless all sorts of other daft (but who can resist them?) goodies such as silver inlet logos!

FWIW, I think this car is one of the second sort, not the first.

I agree

I absolutely agree that both these cars are of the second "flashed-up" variety produced by JaguarSport. Thanks for the clarification

Being facelift cars rules out these being pre joint venture (1988/89) TWR cars and assuming they are all 3 speed auto rules out them being OEM (jaguar) 6 litre. There were no XJRS's produced using jaguars own 6 litre, the release of that model saw the XJRS models end.

FWIW, there is apparently virtually no support (parts, diagnostic equipment) available for the Zytec ignition. On the plus side, they're supposedly quite robust and seldom fail.

So the black car is too far along cosmetically and in mileage. Chances are it will never be worth much. If it was in the wrapper then it would be collectible. With more and more collectible cars out there the threshhold for investible collectibles is really high now days. The 3 speed auto and 2.88 really dulls any sport that is in that car so I think the black car is a good candidate for a 3.54 with 6 speed conversion and a decent paint job. Then it can perform well and be something special again.
