This is most likely to be a defective ignition switch (the electrical bit attached to the back of the actual lock) or the main load relay going home.

Could it also be a bad earth? I've had a number of gauge issues caused by two things, a faulty earth and degradation of one of the connector blocks....

I agree with Greg, my first suspect would be ignition switch. This would kill all instruments dead. A bad ignition amplifier would not kill temp gauge.

Strangely enough, I've just had exactly the same thing happen on my car (a 92 XJR-S) this week. It would start, run, then completely cut out at random. Turns out it was the alarm\immobiliser system that was at fault. Now, I have a dealer installed Jaguar alarm system (JLM1768 ,uses key fob DAC7990), which after some online searching and thanks to others on this forum I was able to simply disable. Lo and behold, the car has since run without any issue!
